Who doesn’t know the infamous Kardashians? With their slew of controversial scandals and over-the-top antics, the Kardashians have risen to fame thanks to us. Yes, us, avid social media users. Those watching and laughing away as Kim Kardashian cries hysterically because she lost a pair of earrings in the sea and also following her on various social networking sites (in her defense, they were $75 000 diamond earrings).

But let’s backtrack just a bit and retrace who Kim Kardashian really is. The 34 year old was, in actual fact, Paris Hilton’s friend and personal assistant before she shot to fame with her sex tape with singer Ray J and later on with her hit reality TV show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

While you could’ve has easily credited E! Entertainment for the Kardashian’s name’s rise to fame, all of this could not have been possible without us viewers.

The Power of Social Media

While I could have easily cited numerous success stories of people using social media to gain fame, Kim Kardashian has truly emulated the power of social media.

It would be naive to explain the rise of Kim’s popularity solely based on her reality TV show but it is also thanks to social media that the Kardashian name has exploded all over the online realm.

But even the media mogul has admitted herself that she would not be where she is right now if it weren’t for social media.

With over 25 million Twitter followers and over 23 million followers on Instagram, Kim Kardashian shot to fame with the help of social media with her Instagram account being the third most popular with the first being @instagram and the second being singer Justin Bieber.

With social media, any Tom, Dick and Harry would be able to broadcast their everyday lives and be whoever they want to be. Take Kayla Itsines for instance. While she may just be another pretty face, Kayla is another individual who rose to fame with the help of social media. The 23 year old fitness trainer now boasts a cool 1.7 million followers on Instagram and posts 4-5 times a day with motivational quotes and transformations of women who have lost weight and gained confidence using her 12 week Bikini Body Training Guide.

With booming social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook, celebrities like Kim Kardashian or even trainers such as Kayla Itsines are able to form a greater and more genuine relationship when they share the details of their everyday personal lives with fans and followers.

And in our minds, it seems as though we know them like our very own friends.

Although the buzz with Kim Kardashian lately is her derriere that kinda resembles a glazed Krispy Kreme donut, the mother of one and wife to music mogul Kanye West is also making a name for herself as a social media guru.

“You play, I earn”

The celebrity is quietly raking in the big bucks, however, not for her controversial attempt to break the Internet with her nude photos in Paper Magazine. But instead, with her mobile video game, Kim Kardashian: Hollywood. And heads up guys, Kim was not paid a single cent to show the world her naked bod (in this occasion).

According to Glu Mobile Inc., the maker of the reality TV star’s mobile game, the app brought in $43 million in its first three months since its launch in June.

And other celebrities are following suit in Kim’s footpath with Lindsay Lohan releasing her very own mobile app game: The Price of Fame. However, the game has yet to show signs of success that Kim’s mobile game has brought about.

Kim Kardashian: Hollywood allows its users to step into the shoes of the Kardashian family where they can craft their own personalities and climb the social ladder. Socializing with A-listers will get you points and you can even buy your very own Malibu home for $10 cash. You can’t actually live in it but your avatar can.

It’s no doubt that Kim is rolling in the dough with her game and free publicity thanks to social media. Even her wedding is getting more hype than Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding back in 2011, well, on social media that is.

With more than 2 million likes on her wedding photo alone, Kim Kardashian is quickly becoming a household name in the social media realm.

With that, it won’t be a surprise if what her one-year-old daughter, North West wears becomes the next trend in fashion tomorrow. Take a fashionista, add some drama into it and top it off with some good ol fashion scandal, you got yourself the next big hit.
