Word of the decade: selfie.

If there’s one photo almost everyone on the planet has, it’s the self-portrait photo aka selfie. In this narcissistic day and age, selfies are a must-have. But how do you master the art of taking quality snaps worthy of display? Here are some tips and tricks to help you achieve a modelesque photo, or at least one that’s flattering enough.

1. Check Yourself Out

It pays to check if something is stuck in your teeth, especially if you’ve just dined out and are about to smile with your teeth showing in this shot. While this can easily be edited out, it saves you the extra effort. If you have makeup on, use your phone’s front camera to see if there is smudging. You might also want to add volume to your hair by fluffing it up a little with your hands since hair tends to look flat in digital images.

2. In Good Light

Every photographer knows how much difference good lighting makes in a picture. Natural lighting is best. Let the sunshine in or go outside for an image that’s clear and flattering. On the other hand, backlights and mood lighting are suitable for a warmer and softer effect. Avoid using flash if you can. It causes glares and, basically, just warps your appearance.

3. Background Check

Ensure that your backdrop’s not filled with clutter, junk, or distasteful items. Yes, there might be juxtaposition with the whole pretty face against an ugly backdrop thing. But no, opposites don’t always attract. Your best bet is a background that is one solid colour, such as a white wall. Also, be on alert for photobombers! It really sucks! Especially when it’s that annoying friend or pesky little brother of yours.

4. Camera tricks

Use the back camera of your phone instead of the front one. Rear-facing cameras result in higher quality pictures. These higher resolution images are more attractive and flattering because they are less blurry or grainy. However, the front camera is used when utilising a selfie monopod.

Selfie monopods, which are also called Selfie sticks, act as arms that can extend to include more people in the selfie shot. Popularised in Southeast Asia and China, these monopods are able to hold up the camera for the photographer, and can be controlled by buttons or bluetooth. It allows people to take their own group shots using the front camera, without having to ask random passersby on the street, ” Can you please help take a picture of us?”

5. Strike a Pose

Angles are crucial in determining whether that shot of you will be flattering. Tilt your face at a 3/4 angle and hold the camera higher than your face for a slimming effect. Avoid holding the camera beneath your face to avoid the double chin effect. More importantly, be confident and workkk it!

 6. Filter to Flatter

Apps like Camera+ have professional features and filters that produce a variety of effects for you to choose from. Select a filter that highlights and accentuates your focal points.

Rise and Sierra are great for their soft touch which hides imperfections such as spots and blemishes. Other filters that vary in saturation and tone include Mayfair, and Hefe. So, play around with the tools until you achieve that desired look for your selfie. The toolbox allows you to crop and zoom as well so photobombers can be kept out of the picture (literally).

The most important tip, however, is to simply have fun! Selfies are all about enjoying and capturing the moment. Explore different types of selfies from group shots to full body selfies. You’re bound to find something that suits you!
