The Kuala Lumpur Eco Film Festival (KLEFF) is one of the first and biggest environmental film festivals held annually in Malaysia, centered around the mission of environmental awareness. It is conceptualized and organized by non-profit environmental organization EcoKnights, a collective body with a vision: to inspire sustainable living among Malaysians.
The festival serves as a tool to facilitate in building a nation of ecologically conscious businesses, individuals, and communities through on-ground activities and film screenings, all focused around critical environmental issues. This year, KLEFF will hold it’s 7th festival at the Publika Shopping Gallery, with a previous record to beat of approximately 46,000 Malaysians reached through its film screenings at selected venues all over Peninsula.
Environmental Film Screenings
KLEFF has recently announced the official lineup of local and international environmental themed films to be screened. Out of 359 submissions (including animation, documentaries, narratives and short films), 75 films were carefully chosen to be screened. They originate from 24 different countries, and 19 of the 75 films are from Malaysia.
6 films that captured some of the most important contemporary environmental issues today were chosen as “official selections”, namely DamNation, Emptying the Skies, GMO OMG, Plastic Paradise, Trashed, and Revolution. With a program curated to offer fresh views on global environmental issues, most of the screenings are accompanied by discussions with filmmakers, environmental experts and special guests.

Programme Highlights & Concurrent Events
Aside from the film screenings, there will be concurrent events happening at the same time.
Green Vibes, a music showcase, will feature a variety of local artist bands and individual performers covering a range of genres. The festival goers can chill to some groovy tones and meet new people with this universal language. Greenscapes is an exhibition by local businesses and NGOs that are at the forefront of environmental sustainability. There are a variety of natural products and services supporting local environmental movements.
If you’re in the mood to learn something new, there will also be workshops and talks, where the public can either learn more about environmental sustainable practices and how to develop a greener lifestyle, or take part in activities such as backyard composting, upcycling, indoor and edible gardens, seedball and worm farm making.
Finally, the Anugerah Hijau Awards Ceremony hosted by KLEFF will celebrate the best youth in environmental projects, in categories such as Green Film, Green Fashion and Green Space (Architecture).
Host a Free Screening
Free community screenings can be provided by the KLEFF roadshow crew for all venues located within Klang Valley upon request. Offices such as DHL, Shell, and HSBC have joined in the green movement this way as well.
“Every year, and as part of KLEFF’s outreach efforts, we encourage any organizations or groups in the Klang Valley to sign up for our community screenings and host a film screening to help enhance their friends or colleagues appreciation and understanding of environmental issues through films,” said KLEFF Festival Director Fadly Bakhtiar.
Partnering with important environmental leaders in the country, KLEFF is steadfastly paving the way to encourage and inspire grassroots communities to adopt a sustainable lifestyle. Award-winning environmental films, interactive learning classrooms and creative clusters within the festival will help to stress the urgent need to take positive actions in salvaging the environment.
