Hello Kitty, Cat No More?

There are a few moments in life when all we believe in, is put to question. That fateful Christmas that you stumbled upon your uncle putting on Santa’s jacket; or when you woke up one morning only to find your tooth still under your pillow, instead of the tooth fairy’s gift. Remember the agony these days brought? You are not alone.

Just a couple of days ago, a similar blow was dealt to the hearts of kids and adults alike, when an icon of their childhood, was announced to have been no more than a deception. We were told – “Hello Kitty, is not a Cat.”

Kitty White – better known as ‘Hello Kitty’, is what everyone assumed to be a cat with humanoid features; much like Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh and close to every other cartoon animal. That of course, was until Sanrio, the company behind Hello Kitty, according to LA Times, just recently made a remark stating that Hello Kitty was a British schoolgirl, not a cat. They went further on to say that she even had a pet cat of her own – Charmmy Kitty. To be honest, Charmmy Kitty looks not a lot different from a Hello Kitty on all fours. Needless to say, this revelation had the world in a tizzy.

Fortunately for the avid Hello Kitty fandom, it did not end here. To everyone’s relief, when contacted by Kotaku, Sanrio stated – “Hello Kitty was done in the motif of a cat. It’s going too far to say that Hello Kitty is not a cat. Hello Kitty is a personification of a cat.”

Thus putting all speculation to rest, it should be safe to assume, based on Sanrio’s statement, that Hello Kitty is after all, like most cartoons, just a humanization of an animal. Getting technical might cause some confusion, but for goodness’ sake – she’s a fictional character; she deserves some creative liberties.
