The booking period for this promotion runs from Sept 1 to 7, 2014, with travel period from Sept 2, 2014 to Jan 31, 2015. However, do note that AirAsia imposes an embargo period from Dec 15, 2014 to Jan 4, 2015.

The exclusive fares are available online at the AirAsia website, AirAsia’s mobile apps on iPhone, Android devices and the Blackberry 10, and also AirAsia’s mobile site.

AirAsia head of commercial, Spencer Lee said to The Star, “We are proud of Malaysia for all of its achievements and thankful for the freedom, unity and peace enjoyed by all Malaysians, who strived together for the nation. AirAsia is proud to be a successful home-grown airline and company which carries the Malaysian flag all across the region.”

“Also in conjunction with the celebration, AirAsia is having a call-to-action campaign to commemorate the occasion with the hashtag #KamiMalaysia,” Lee said.

“The public can share photos of ‘what makes them Malaysia’ and tag @AirAsia on Instagram,” Lee further added.

The public is also invited to watch AirAsia’s #KamiMalaysia video on the airline’s official Facebook page and Youtube channel, a tribute to the harmony and uniqueness of beautiful Malaysia.

This campaign by AirAsia seems to have been well thought over, and it tops the recent campaign launched and then later withdrawn by Malaysia Airlines (MAS). MAS had earlier launched a contest several days ago in Australia and New Zealand, giving away free econoy-class tickets and free iPads. The problem with the contest, however, was the competition name: My Ultimate Bucket List.

In order to win the free prizes, contestants had to submit an application with an answer of 500 words or less to the question: “What and where would you like to tick off on your bucket list, and explain why?” Although MAS’s intentions were probably genuine, the lack of consideration in the campaign name caused it to become a marketing disaster.

After all, the term bucket list refers to a list of things that one would like to do before dying. Given that MAS was struck with 2 tragedies this year with the total loss of 537 lives, this competition obviously struck a wrong chord with netizens. MAS has since realised the inappropriateness of the campaign and has withdrawn the competition.

In the spirit of Merdeka, however, we should not be too quick to judge MAS on the accidental blunder. After all, no serious harm was caused and MAS supporters continue to look forward to their next campaign.
