Five years ago, Uber began in San Francisco with only two cars and four people. Today, this ride sharing service has been steadily gaining popularity, and currently serves 311 cities in 58 countries. What’s more impressive is that they recently got on board their one millionth driver — all in just five years.

The ride sharing service has been available in Malaysia for a while now, and if you haven’t yet tried it out, here are 5 things you need to know about Uber in Malaysia:

  1. Despite the rise in fares, Uber’s services are still up to 20% cheaper compared to regular taxi fares in Malaysia.
  2. There will be NO minimum fare for your uberX ride; base fares remain the same at RM2, while cancellation fees stand at RM5.
  3. Uber has been helping drivers earn thousands to cushion the impact of the GST (Goods and Services Tax). According to The Malaysian Insider, a former taxi driver with 16 years of experience mentioned that working for Uber allowed him to bring home a gross salary of RM3,800 to RM4,000 a month — a figure significantly higher than when he was a taxi driver earning RM1,120 to RM1,200.
  4. Uber’s safety standards was called into question when local celebrity Daniella Sya got involved in a case of harassment with an Uber driver.
  5. To date, despite the controversy between JPJ and Uber, the Uber app is not illegal as far as the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) is concerned.
