The Ultimate Guide To SHINE Festival 2015

Being young sure makes you feel invincible. Just ask the National Youth Council (NYC), who will be taking over Orchard Road this coming July. Yep, blocked out from ION Orchard all the way to Mandarin Gallery, Cineleisure and *SCAPE, and with activities to keep you on your toes over three days — it’s the SHINE Festival 2015, happening from 10-12 July. Organised by the NYC, SHINE Festival is looking like quite the spectacle.

A national platform for youths to showcase their talents and passion, SHINE is also celebrating its 10th anniversary, and this year, the spotlight will be on all things youth culture. Split into four sectors, we explore some of the action that will be happening.

Celebrating Youth Through Music And Dance

This sector makes for the biggest chunk of the festival, and rightly so. In the past few years, Singapore has seen the music and dance community grow to be the bustling scene it is today. Youths can also score the chance to perform and collaborate with the SHINE artists on stage. Some of the notable sessions include meeting David Choi and Lydia Paek up-close at their meet and greet, breakdancing alongside Radikal Forze, and signing up to join the show choir competition.

Urban Sports

Definitely an alternative experience to arena sports and the track and field events that we’re accustomed to, urban sports has developed a following here in Singapore. From Freestyle Football to Parkour, Freerunning to Kendama, you can expect a different kind of fix at SHINE Festival 2015.

Witness performances by pros like Sean Garnier, Football Freestyle World Champion, and learn a thing or two from the man himself — he will be conducting workshops during the festival. It is quite another thing to see unusual sports being practiced in a busy and unpredictable urban setting, but to be able to observe professionals doing it at Orchard Road — we can’t wait for the actual festival to happen.

Painting The Streets of Orchard Road With Visual Arts

Another reason we look forward to the SHINE Festival is that anyone can be an artist at the event. In one of the social collaborative projects, visitors search for images that represent the theme and stick them on a large billboard — this collective effort will slowly build into an amazing montage. Other collaborative art projects include a highly interactive video painting session, where video booth painting technology will be used to create art.
