If you were wondering why petrol stations were filled with people rushing to fill their petrol tanks on the night of June 30, it’s probably because you didn’t know that fuel prices will be increased from the 1st of July.

And the reason you had no idea about this increased fuel prices is because Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hasan Malek has stated that there will be no more announcements of monthly petrol and diesel prices from now on, unlike previous months whereby the prices of fuel were publicly published on the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry website.

According to an article by The Star, the minister said, “We have decided to stop the practice of announcing the prices on the last day of the month. From now, motorists will only know of the prices at midnight.”

While motorists will be kept in the dark until the day of the price change, price changes (if any) will be issued in advance to retailers.

The increased fuel prices might make Malaysians think twice about driving to work. Carpooling or third party taxi-booking apps could be the next best option; unfortunately that isn’t a pretty sight either with taxi drivers protesting against apps like GrabTaxi and Uber.
