Elections May Be Coming Back, But Yam Ah Mee Is Not

This article originally appeared on Vulcan Post.

We all smell it in the air: the General Elections season is probably almost upon us. But while we may be looking forward to exciting rallies, heated debates, and new faces in Singapore’s political scene to love/hate, there is one face that we probably won’t be seeing this time round.

You may remember this face from the last general election. Yam Ah Mee, the then-Returning Officer that took Singapore by storm at the announcement of the 2011 General Elections results. Thanks to his mellow, robotic voice and fatherly appearance, he became an instant hit on social media, and was subjected to many memes, videos, and even remixes. His Facebook fanclub — Yam Ah Mee, Returning Officer Extraordinaire — has over 34,000 followers.

Sadly, Yam Ah Mee is no longer a civil servant, having stepped down from his position as the People’s Association’s Chief Executive to join the private sector as Managing Director of Sembcorp Design and Construction. The next General Elections won’t be the same without him and his trademark voice.

But in case you missed him, here is the Yam Ah Mee throwback you never knew you needed, but want all the same.
