It’s no surprise, Singapore: Lee Kuan Yew was the most talked about topic on social media this year, according to Facebook. His passing on 23 March brought a nation together, and also online, to pay their respects and tributes in their own ways.

The touching tribute video of Mr Lee’s relationship with his late wife Madam Kwa Geok Choo — where we saw a more tender side of the former prime minister — raked in more than 2 million views and was shared over 115,000 times on Facebook. A photo by former US president George Bush came up tops in foreign tributes of Mr Lee’s lifetime achievements, and received 106,000 likes. On Instagram, we saw a flurry of tribute hashtags in honour of his passing.

Aside from Lee Kuan Yew, other milestones that dominated online conversations this year included the birth of the first SG50 baby at the stroke of midnight on 1 January, the stellar performance of Team Singapore athletes at this year’s SEA Games, where a massive 84 gold medals were won on home soil, and of course the whirlwind of SG50 nostalgia that has been in the air since the start of the year.

And all of these tributes and SG50 topics culminated in 29 million interactions — in likes, shares, posts and comments — made by 1.7 million people in Singapore. Not bad at all, little red dot.
