Uber Singapore adds new “UberXL” to its fleet; targets families and party goers

Before Uber launched its service in Singapore, the only way for people to get around is through the public transport (cab) or by driving. If you do not own a car and want to travel by cab, you have to either flag down a cab or call the taxi booking number up.

Uber changed that: You can now travel in style.

Founded in 2009 in the United States, Uber provides on demand private driver to anyone. Need a private driver now? Simply launch the Uber app, select your pick up location, and a classy luxurious car will be on its way to pick you up. You can also track where the driver is so that you are kept in the loop on his location.

First launched in on February last year in Singapore, Uber rides are mostly powered on luxurious Mercedes or BMW model series.

Earlier last week however, Uber Singapore announced that it is adding on a new category of car for its growing users in Singapore: UberXL. On top of its existing UberSedan fleet, which is meant for normal date nights or even client meetings, the new UberXL is targetted at users who require bigger seating capacity, especially those with family.

How does it work? According to its email newsletter, when you Uber next, slide to the vehicle type you prefer at the bottom of the app, set your pick up location and hit Request. The app will then connect you to the nearest available car of your choice.

Whether you are taking UberSedan or UberXL, the pricing remain the same: the base fare comes at S$7.00 and there are additional charges for each kilometer or each minute you take the Uber ride.

If you are looking for a cheaper (and less classy) alternative to Uber, you can of course opt for the normal taxi rides in Singapore, and there are several apps that can help you flag a cab, which you can find on the app stores.
