I’m guilty of it, you’re guilty of it—and everybody knows. We spend way too much time glued to our devices that we sometimes forget to look up from it for an extended period of time.

This syndrome may ring true for most in the working class society these days, as we are faced with our screens for at least a quarter of our day at work, not including the time spent leisurely facing our beloved smartphone, laptop or other mobile devices.

As revealed by a recent Global Video Insights survey by Vuclip, Malaysians do indeed love our mobile devices, and in specific, over-the-top video on demand content. OTT is an acronym which is usually used to describe someone who is over-the-top in their character; however, in terms of content player, it represents the delivery of audio, video and other media content on the internet without using a multiple-system operator.

Out of the 4600 respondents of the survey from 10 different countries, 500 of them are Malaysians in the age range of 18-35 years, who view content on their smartphones at least one time a month. From the data compiled, here are 5 things about Malaysians’ video consumption habits.

1. Malaysians cannot do without these seven features when viewing videos.

We cannot do without a smooth user interface, a buffer-free experience, HD video quality, as well as latest or fresh video content. Other key components to a fuss-free video-watching experience would be the streaming quality, video download feature, and the ability to download multiple videos at the same time. Yup, we Malaysians are indeed particular about our viewing experience.

2.  Malaysians prefer watching our videos on our laptops and PCs.

45% of the respondents from the survey connected with the preference of watching video content on their laptops and computers. Smartphone users amount to 23%, whilst tablet users amount to 9%. Half of the respondents also stated that they watch videos on these devices daily.

3. Malaysians prefer watching shorter video contents on our mobile phones.

It’s perhaps already a permanent appendage anyways by now, hence it is no surprise that 84% of the respondents prefer watching short form contents on their mobile devices. This is followed by 70% for laptops or computers, and 17% for television viewers.

4. Malaysians love to laugh, as we adore our comedy fix.

60% of the videos that Malaysians download or purchase online tend to be comedies, and this is followed by action and sports for the males, and romance and drama for the females.

5. Malaysians are practically Wi-Fi vultures.

43% of Malaysians use Wi-Fi when they are accessing content over the internet on their mobile devices, and this follows with 3G connection at 32%, and 4G at 22%. 8 out of 10 individuals also tend to watch at home, while 5 out of 10 of us would do so wherever there is free Wi-Fi. There is little surprise there, seeing since Malaysians love anything which is free anyways.

What this proves about not just us Malaysians but the community in general, is that our mobile devices are governing the way we peruse and indulge in online content. Most would utilise it daily or weekly, and this is a great opportunity more than ever for businesses to leverage on their online presence, by having content, either through social media, or from having their own website.
