It was a case of better be safe than sorry and the officials’ swift response to the incident was commendable. Tan Sri Khalid said that the area of the scene was cordoned off only 45 minutes after they were informed and a bomb squad had arrived 35 minute later, whilst the canine unit was deployed a few minutes after. Five fire trucks were also present.

The city police chief Comm Datuk Tajudin Md Isa also said that the suspected explosives were later detonated by a bomb squad team.

After the case was investigated, it turned out to be just a science experiment left behind by several students.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar tweeted that, “The bottles did not contain explosive material but were experimental lamps left by the students from a school in Bukit Beruntung.” The bottles looked like ordinary jam bottles and were given out to students of SMK Sungai Buaya upon their visit to Petrosains.

This bomb scare comes at a sensitive time with Malaysians on high alert about terrorism warnings. It is a relief to know that this was just a misunderstanding, and that doesn’t mean that we should not always be cautious and wary of our surroundings; however, let’s also not spread rumours about bombs being deployed in Kuala Lumpur and scare netizens unnecessarily.
