Google Wants You In Its Singapore “Kampung” – Here Are The Roles That They’re Hiring For

Last week, photos of Google’s gorgeous new headquarters graced our social media feeds and gave us major office envy.

‘Typical’ new-school office features like high ceilings, open spaces and huge screens aside, the tech giant’s new Singapore home also includes elements of local culture.

One of the few things that stood out was its cafeteria, which is heavily-inspired by hawker food, and serves Googlers local favourites like chicken rice and roti prata.

During the media viewing, Google also showed off meeting rooms which were inspired by kampungs, in a bid “to foster better co-working between Googlers and the creation of a neighbourly community”.

They’ve also announced the upcoming launch of their ‘Code in the Community’ initiative, which aims to teach around 3,000 kids from low-income homes coding skills over the next three years.

While it can be passed off as superficial forms of integration to appease the local community, it seems like they’re actually taking this kampung idea pretty seriously.

This morning, The Straits Times published an article on Joanna Flint, Google’s Singapore country director, stating that they “want to welcome more Singaporeans into its new ‘kampung‘”.

Said Flint, “We want to bring the community into Google.”

With Google staff numbers in Singapore “doubling from 2013 to its headcount of 1,000 today”, Flint also cited that we’re the company’s fastest-growing office in Asia, and that having a presence in Singapore is “a massive breakthrough”.

There’s a focus on building up the engineering team in its local office, albeit no official numbers of the intended strength being mentioned, and she revealed that one of its areas of focus is catering to the “next billion users” – most coming from emerging Asian markets.

The company is said to be “looking to invest heavily in talent”, but she emphasised that the search for the “right talent” isn’t easy these days.

“What I’m finding lacking is getting people who can problem-solve. Critical thinking, as well as being able to communicate, is the most important thing we’re looking for. […] Hiring people who can only do one thing is going to be an issue. The company is moving, changing and evolving as the world is evolving, and that skill is becoming a critical piece.”

While your guess on if you’re a right fit for their needs is as good as ours, here are some of the open positions in the local office that you could try your luck at:
