In October last year, British electrics company Dyson announced that it is building its first electric car manufacturing plant in Singapore as part of a £2.5 billion (~S$4.4 billion) global investment in new technology.
The two-storey facility is reported to be located at Jurong, and is slated to complete construction in 2020.
Dyson — famed for its cordless vacuums and hair dryers — first announced its entry into the automotive sector in 2017, with founder James Dyson claiming that his cars would be “radically different” from existing electric vehicles.
Although it specialises in electronic appliances, Dyson has experience in building the essential components of electric cars, including electric batteries and digital motors.
Last year’s reports revealed that Dyson plans to roll out a range of EVs, including a high-end model as well as two less expensive vehicles designed for the mass market.
Dyson has filed patents for its electric car 18 months ago. It was only made public yesterday (18 May), providing a “glimpse of some of the inventive steps that [they] are considering.”
A company spokesman revealed that Dyson’s first car is expected to hit the roads by 2021.

In an email addressed to all staff, founder Dyson said more than 500 people are working on this project.
It is already starting hiring rounds on LinkedIn and its website’s career page.
Based on the job listings, the firm is hiring for roles ranging from engineers, software developers, project managers, among others.
In total, there are over 100 available positions under Dyson Singapore, but not all are for automotive roles.
Previously, Dyson said that it is looking to “more than double” the headcount of its Research, Design and Development (RDD) teams in Singapore.
