Back in 2014, the Ministry of Defence revamped the Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT), implementing a brand new scoring system and reducing the number of stations from five to three.
In addition to those changes, they also introduced the Electronic IPPT Scoring System (ELISS), which uses machines equipped with motion sensors to record push-ups and sit-ups more accurately.
One big problem with this, however, is that these machines are exclusive to SAF camps, which prevents NSF’s and NSmen from training for their IPPTs in actual test conditions.
If you’ve ever ran into that problem, here’s some good news — to commemorate SAF Day True Fitness has installed an ELISS machine to their Tampines branch, the first one to be located outside of an SAF camp.
“NSFs and NSmen have been unable to train using the machine, and often, their only encounter with it is during their IPPTs” True Group director Sean Tan said in a press release.
“With ELISS now available at True Fitness Tampines, they will have the opportunity to practice and better understand how the machine works ahead of their IPPTs, and ensure that every push-up counts.”
Of course, you’ll have to be a True Fitness member to use the machine, though members of the public are welcome to try it out for free from the 1st to 14th of July.
If you need some extra motivation, the gym is even offering a 6-month membership to the person with the highest push-up score.
While only the push-up machine is available at the moment, this is a promising first step to making ELISS machines an ubiquitous fixture in gyms in the future. Knock it down, anyone?
