Singaporeans looking to develop their careers in the creative and technological fields, such as media and film or UI/UX (user interface and user experience) design, can take part in a month-long “exchange” in New York.
Described as a social enterprise, NewYork.SG runs a career development programme in New York City for promising youth who live in Singapore.
Professionals from companies like Google, Twitter, Spotify, The New York Times, and Gong Cha, among others, conduct workshops for participants in those industries.
The programme also requires participants to complete a project designed by a company or a professional there that will go in their portfolio.
At the end of the programme, participants will receive career support, like workshops and job recommendations, for up to two years.
According to The Straits Times, selected participants will be flown to New York where each of them will be assigned an adviser who will set out weekly challenges and find out what participants want to achieve.
The programme’s inaugural batch in March 2018, consisting of polytechnic graduates, was funded by the National Youth Council of Singapore (NYC).
The programme also launched a November intake last year targeted at young working adults.
From July next year, university students will be able to apply to take part in the programme too.
The initiative was inspired by New York-based Singaporeans who hope to empower determined young people, its website said.
