The Mate 30 might be the next big Huawei product to look out for, but a sudden influx of trademark applications suggest that the Chinese tech giant might have something else in the works as well.

According to a report by Dutch publication LetsGoDigital, Huawei has registered trademarks for the P300, P400, P500, P600, P700, P900 and P1000 in the United Kingdom, under the “smartphone” category.

As their names suggest, these trademarks probably have something to do with Huawei’s ‘P’ series of smartphones. Considering that the flagship P30 is currently the only phone in said series, however, could Huawei be thinking of a name change?

Outlandish as it sounds, this actually wouldn’t be the first time that Huawei has switched up their naming conventions — back in 2018 the P10 suddenly jumped 10 digits to the P20. It’s unlikely that they’ll do another name change in such a short span of time, but it’s not impossible either.

If you ask us, the more likely scenario is that Huawei is planning to expand their catalogue of photography-focused phones. Not everyone is willing to drop S$1,398 for a P30 Pro, and Huawei could be making a lower-tier ‘P’ series smartphone to appeal to more budget-conscious customers.

In fact, Huawei already tested the waters this year with the S$348 P30 Lite, so its not out of the realm of possibility for them to turn that concept into an entirely new product line in 2020.

With no other information your guess is as good as ours at this point, but considering that trademarks must be used once they’re applied (third parties can motion to have a trademark cancelled if you don’t), we can expect…something in the next year or so.
