Best Office Ever? Shopee’s 6-Storey HQ At Kent Ridge Has Nap Pods, In-House Masseuse

Yesterday (3 September), Shopee unveiled their new 6-storey regional headquarters at Kent Ridge.

The ecommerce firm said the move reflects their commitment to invest and innovate in Singapore and the region.

With the upgraded capacity, their new office steps up the game to create more job opportunities and nurture tech talent.

Since Shopee was launched in 2015, it has expanded operations into Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia and Taiwan, with each market being served by an independent localised app.

They most recently logged the highest number of monthly active users among shopping apps in Q2 2019 according to App Annie, while users also spent the most ‘total time in app’ during their sessions on Shopee.

In the same period, Shopee reportedly received 246.3 million orders regionally, recording a gross merchandise volume of US$3.8 billion.

The company saw US$177.4 million in revenue in Q2 2019, which marks a growth of 201.7% year-on-year.

Shopee Chief Commercial Officer Zhou Junjie said: “Our new office reaffirms our long-term commitment to the country and elevates Singapore’s attractiveness as the Silicon Valley of Southeast Asia.”

He added that Shopee will “continue to invest ahead of demand” and build more advanced capabilities to serve their users as the ecommerce landscape evolves.

A New Home For 3,000

Shopee has grown from a start-up to the region’s leading e-commerce platform in less than four years. Singapore has been our headquarters, even when we were just 10 employees strong.

When we visited the spangly new office, the excitement was evident in the Shopee team who took us for a look around.

It was a proud moment for them—the first time they outgrew their space, parts of the team moved in with their parent company Sea.

Now, they experienced what it’s like to grow so fast that they needed to relocate once again, letting the whole team come back together in one building of their own, they told us.

Shopee’s new space spans 244,000 sq ft across six floors.

It is able to house 3,000 employees, of which their headcount is currently coming to around 1,500.

Shopee says the new headquarters is designed with the main overarching concepts of promoting connectivity, collaboration and community.

Let’s have a look.

To encourage employees to mingle and exchange ideas freely, Shopee made sure to feature plenty of open areas and collaborative working spaces.

Even the large central staircase was designed with purpose, in hopes to give people more opportunities for conversation when they move through the building

Shopee’s new studio is all set up to film content for their in-app features Shopee LIVE which lets users watch live videos of their favourite merchants, and Shopee Quiz where users can play and answer questions to win prizes.

If there’s instantly a favourite feature, it’s the nap pods where employees can go for a quick recharge, tucked away in a corner. On. Every. Floor.

Each room on each floor has 8 nap pods

Of course, no new-age office these days is complete without a couple of interesting meeting rooms, right?

Shopee has named their bigger rooms after each of the markets they’re in, and the smaller ones are affectionately named after landmarks in Singapore.

Besides the working spaces, Shopee dedicated its entire first floor to more leisure areas: a huge cafeteria that fits 1,000 people, a 3,000 sq ft gym, fun zone, and massage room.

With it’s sheer size, the cafeteria doubles as an event space (with a stage too)
Dinner is provided daily for free, upon employees’ request!
No need to feel shy, Shopee’s gym has 20 treadmills and other fitness equipment
Employees can make appointments with an in-house masseuse when they need to loosen their muscles

Along with the fresh new space, Shopee is also heightening its wellness initiatives for staff, letting them join interest groups and take part in programmes like rock climbing, yoga and even K-pop fitness.

Users can expect lots more coming up from Shopee too.

For one, their iconic 9.9 Super Shopping Day is just days away. Shopee is running a different offer each day leading up to it as usual, but this time with their latest brand ambassador Cristiano Ronaldo front and centre (as you must have seen by now).

In October, they will be launching their I’m the Best Coder! Challenge, targeting coders and programmers at all levels, from junior college, polytechnic, or university students to professionals from all fields.

We’ll be keeping a lookout!
