DBS QR ang bao

Last year, DBS piloted the world’s first loadable QR Gift (then called QR Ang Bao) to ring in the Chinese New Year.

If you’re still unfamiliar with it, the QR Gifts are physical red packets, but you don’t fill them up with cash.

Instead, you ‘load’ your desired cash value (of up to S$999) onto a QR code. Then, your recipient scans the QR code again to get the value credited into their account.

This was created with “the dual objective of eliminating the use of cash whilst preserving the tradition of exchanging physical red packets”.

According to DBS, the initiative was well received with over S$1.5 million loaded onto QR Gifts during the Chinese New Year period of 2019.

“We’re pleased that the public responded warmly to the DBS QR Gift last year and have been taking in feedback from consumers since then,” said Jeremy Soo, Managing Director and Head of Consumer Banking Group (Singapore), DBS Bank.

This year, DBS’ QR Gift is back again, with some new features to make celebrations even more hassle-free.

Non-DBS Users Can Now ‘Huat’ Too

While the QR Gift could previously be sent and received only by DBS PayLah! users, DBS has now extended the service so that all PayNow users can also redeem funds directly into their bank accounts.

For PayNow users, it works slightly differently:

After scanning the QR code on your smartphone, select the option to ‘Redeem via PayNow’.

You will be prompted to sign in to your SingPass account on your mobile browser or the SingPass Mobile app.

Choose the linked PayNow account that you want your QR Gift to be credited to, and the amount will be deposited!

Teenagers under the age of 16, who previously didn’t have access to DBS PayLah!, will also be able to redeem their own QR Gift this year with their parents consent.

To bring even greater convenience to QR Gift senders, DBS has added a new bulk-loading feature that lets customers load up to 10 QR Gifts at once.

Granted, it limits you to setting the same loaded cash value, message and animation for all 10 recipients, but it sure comes in handy to save you some time!

Where To Get Your DBS QR Gift Cards

DBS QR Gift cards are now available at all DBS and POSB full-service branches, DBS Treasures Centres and POSB Pop-up ATMs islandwide.

Customers can collect them in packs of eight for free.

The QR Gifts will be valid for use from 9 January 2020 to 21 February 2020, and any funds not redeemed by 21 February 2020 will be refunded to the senders.

To make the season a truly prosperous affair, DBS is giving users a chance to win cash prizes by playing ‘TapLah!’, a mobile game hosted on the DBS PayLah! app.

From 25 January to 8 February 2020, daily prizes of S$88 will be awarded to the top 25 players with the highest game scores at the end of each day.

The player with the highest score of the entire game period will walk away with the grand prize of S$800.

Each qualifying transaction of a DBS QR Gift gives you one chance to take part.

Qualifying transactions are defined as when a DBS PayLah! user loads and gives a QR Gift to a unique receiver who redeems it by 8 February 2020, or when a DBS PayLah! user redeems a QR Gift from a unique giver by 8 February 2020.
