How To Play The Tough New Smartphone Game: The Predictive Text Challenge

Hanging out with your friends this weekend, but have nothing to do? Why don’t you try out the Predictive Text Challenge?

Inspired by the iPhone’s new predictive text function from iOS8, American YouTubers Rhett and Link came up with this game to make full use of this new function for the sole purpose of entertainment. Android users have had this function for quite a while now, so Android fans can play along too. All you need is two smartphones with chat apps, and you’re all set.

Basically, the game consists of two people in the same chat window. It’s pretty easy to play with a few people in a group chat function as well. You start with a ‘magic word’, and the aim is to make a sentence using only predictive text options available to you that will help you reach that word, while staying somewhat coherent.

Here’s a step-by-step play, by Rhett and Link.

First, you start with a ‘magic word’. In this scenario, its the word ‘roof’.

Next, you type out a word that you think will help you get to the word ‘roof’. Rhett has picked out ‘shingles’, while Link went with ‘climb’.

Then, in a time limit of 20 seconds, use the predictive text options to craft out a sentence to try to reach ‘roof’. In this case, both parties didn’t manage to reach the word, and failed the challenge, but ended up with two hilarious sentences to laugh about. Trust me, it’s more difficult than it looks.

But when it happens, the moment is just beautiful.

Obvious rules are that you can’t begin with the magic word itself (duh), you can’t exceed the time limit of 20seconds, and thanks to the magic of time stamps, first one to the word wins.

Let us know if you’ve played it, and what you think about the game! Maybe make the game extra difficult by using an online random word generator too, if you’re game enough.
