Most of us are familiar with Twitter. For those who don’t, Twitter is a microblogging social networking site where you can send out tweets in 140 characters to your followers. It’s the short messaging service of the new age. Registered users can read and post tweets, but unregistered users can only read them.
February this year, Twitter has surpassed 241 million monthly active users, with 500 million Tweets sent per day.
Earlier this week, an infographic caught our attention. According to social media API aggregation company Gnip, the top ten language of tweets are as follows:
- English
- Japanese
- Spanish
- Portuguese
- Indonesian
- Arabic
- French
- Turkish
- Russian
- Korean
While there are no actual number of users reported, the chart clearly shows that Twitter is gaining popularity in other countries, especially here in Asia. It’s second most used language is now Japanese, according to Gnip. Indonesian, also showed a huge rise in terms of tweets between 2011 to 2013. Thai tweets also rose in numbers in the past few years.
Korean and Chinese on the other hand, are witnessing a decline in number of tweets.
Twitter has been actively expanding its reach in Asia, and while the core team is based in Singapore, they do not have an office presence there yet. The team has grown to over 30 people in Singapore, and they primarily focus on advertising sales.
Twitter has also gone on a hiring spree earlier this year in Asia. The company previously focused the bulk of its energy and attention in the region on Japan and its new Australia office, but now it appears to be increasing its efforts in India, Southeast Asia and the rest of the region.
