Vulcan Post recently learnt that Malaysian apparel and travel brand Thousand Miles is shutting down.

“We’re writing to share some bittersweet news with you,” an email from Thousand Miles to customers read. “After five amazing years serving the community in Malaysia, we’ve made the difficult decision to permanently close our store.”

“At Thousand Miles, our mission has always been to enhance your travel and everyday experiences by helping you focus on what truly matters: exploration. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts to overcome various challenges, we’ve had to make the tough decision to close Thousand Miles.”

Aside from the email and as well as an announcement on their website, no posts have been made on the brand’s social media platforms. The brand also did not cite any specific reasons for their closure.

As a final farewell, the Thousand Miles is hosting a clearance sale with discounts up to 70%. At the time of writing, though, many products and sizes already seem to be sold out.

“We hope you’ll always prioritise time for getaways and have clothes that are ready for whatever adventures await,” the Thousand Miles email read.

Sister brands Bottom Labs and Eubi close down too

The parent company behind these brands is none other than RPG Commerce, which builds direct-to-consumer (DTC) ecommerce brands.

The startup last closed US$29 million for its Series B funding in 2022.

Looking into RPG Commerce’s other brands, we noticed that Bottom Labs and Eubi—its two other apparel brands—are also closing down. In fact, Eubi already appears to have closed down in June 2024, according to its website.

Perhaps the closure of these brands could be an indication that RPG Commerce is undergoing a form of restructuring. The business could be opting to focus on their (seemingly more popular) brands, Montigo and Cosmic Cookware.

“I always tell the team, be fearful when you’ve reached the top,” CEO Melvin Chee had said during a business conference.

He elaborated that staying ahead of the curve is about keeping an innovative and fresh mindset, and that there should be a culture that allows the team to explore and do things that are “crazy” or even “stupid”.

Maybe these closures are a reflection of those values. In any case, we’ll be keeping an eye on RPG Commerce and other brands in its portfolio to see what’s next for the homegrown company.
