Due to COVID-19’s impact, at least 741,600 people out of Malaysia’s workforce of 15.9 million are unemployed, according to a report released in October by the Statistics Department.

A new wave of fresh grads will be entering the workforce by the end of this year too. Lots of people will be desperate for jobs.

The good news is, there are plenty of job-hunting apps out there that enable you to apply while on the go. It’s easier and faster, and we have 10 of them listed for you today.

1. FastJobs

Launched in Singapore in 2015, FastJobs is mostly dedicated to the blue-collar and casual workforce looking for part time or contract jobs.

When you enter the app, its home page will show you a few states in your country to discover available jobs.

The “Discover” page to me seems rather messy and looks like it lists jobs randomly, with some of them carrying a “Featured” label on it.

Though I’m not sure what this label means, one can assume (with experience from using Google) that the employers who have this label perhaps paid more to have their job shown as one of the first hits.

When you apply for jobs on the app, you’ll be sent a verification code via SMS to confirm the application.

Below each job info, there are links below for you to share the job with others.

I think it’s a useful function if you’re job hunting with friends or helping someone else with their job search.

It lets you refer them to a job if you happen to see something that’s more suitable for them.

Ease Of Login: Create an account or login with Facebook.

View Salary: Yes.

Details About Job: Expiry date for job ad and other details recruiters choose to fill in.

Filtering: Location, salary, job type, and industry.

Download it on: App Store or Play Store.

2. Indeed

The Indeed database has over 45,500 job openings in Malaysia.

You can choose to either upload or create a CV on Indeed itself by adding details about your past education, work experience, and skills to ease the application process later on.

One benefit a colleague pointed out about Indeed from her review of its website, is that you can actually see how responsive an employer is so you won’t be left clueless about the status of your application.

Ease Of Login: Create an account or login with Facebook or Google.

View Salary: Yes.

Details About Job: Job responsibilities and requirements.

Filtering: Job category, position level, location, and minimum salary.

Download it on: App Store or Play Store.

3. JoraJobs

JoraJobs has over 72,100 vacancies available on its platform from all over Malaysia.

Browsing this app reminded me of LinkedIn’s job tab. You can’t filter jobs based on industries or job positions, but on keywords you put in.

Most jobs on the app are posted from external job sites like WOBB or the company’s site itself, so applying for the jobs will be done through these external links.

I find JoraJobs to be more of a consolidator for job postings. It might benefit recruiters in managing their job ads.

But for job seekers, it would be kind of messy to keep track of all these external links you’re applying on as it’s not managed within a single system.

Ease Of Login: Login with Facebook.

View Salary: No.

Details About Job: Job description, requirements, and company culture.

Filtering: No filter options, just search keywords.

Download it on: App Store or Play Store.

4. JobStore

JobStore has at least 8,576 job openings listed on its site in Malaysia alone.

The app is also available in Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, and Philippines.

In order to filter jobs based on locations, you’ll have to allow the app to track your location first.

Without enabling this permission, I wasn’t even allowed to search for jobs in specific cities.

Similar to Indeed, the app can notify you when employers start reviewing your application.

It also has a tab to show you all your scheduled interview dates. I find the latter to be a valuable feature as it gives job seekers a built in system to keep track of their applications and interviews so that no meeting times will clash.

Once you’ve filled in all the necessary details for your profile, the application process is pretty straight forward from there.

Ease Of Login: Create an account or login with Facebook or Google.

View Salary: Yes.

Details About Job: Job responsibilities, and requirements.

Filtering: Job category, position level, location, and minimum salary.

Download it on: App Store or Play Store.

5. JobStreet

I think everyone who’s ever hunted for a job before is familiar with JobStreet and has used the browser version in the past.

When you first sign up for JobStreet, you’ll choose what types of fields you’d want to see in your recommendations.

Upon applying for a job, the app will take you to a new page to upload your resume and fill in some additional info you’d want to share with the employer.

Some jobs also have a section where you’ll have to answer some questions about your work experience in the application.

Ease Of Login: Create an account or login with Facebook.

View Salary: Yes, upon login.

Details About Job: Job description, requirements, company culture, and company info.

Filtering: Industry, expected salary, and location.

Download it on: App Store or Play Store.

6. Maukerja

Similar to FastJobs, Maukerja specialises in blue-collar and gig economy-type jobs like insurance agents or delivery riders.

Their job match analysis is able to recommend jobs to list in the “For You” page based on the details you’ve filled in of your past work experience and education.

You can also curate the jobs you want to see by clicking the 4 dots on the top right of the home page to access their “Favourites Tab” to filter listings.

Once you add job categories such as high paying jobs or jobs with urgent hires, you’ll only be able to see postings with these filters for your suggested jobs.

The app also has a forum tab where you can pose questions for other job seekers to comment on.

However, plenty of these threads are mostly complaints about the job industry and aren’t very helpful at all.

Another thing that annoyed me with this app was its bad grammar, but it’s not a big deal in terms of functionality.

Rather, it just looks unprofessional and half-baked, as if it didn’t go through a review before pushing it out into the market.

Ease Of Login: Create an account or login with Facebook or Google.

View Salary: Yes.

Details About Job: Job requirements and responsibilities, as well as company info and benefits.

Filtering: Job industry and location.

Download it on: App Store or Play Store.

7. Monster

Monster offers dedicated COVID-19 job support to job seekers impacted by the pandemic.

You can also search for work from home jobs, flexi jobs, and online jobs.

When you first sign up, you can click on a checkbox to let employers know that you’re ready and available to start working.

The app also has an upskill tab to give you advice on application tips, resume help, and access to content about the job industry.

Similar to Jora, some of the jobs here are linked to external sites. So when you hit apply, it will prompt if you’d like to be referred to those sites to apply there.

Ease Of Login: Create an account or login with Facebook or Google.

View Salary: No.

Details About Job: Skills you match up to, job description and details, and company info.

Filtering: Job industry, role, and location.

Download it on: App Store or Play Store.

8. Ricebowl

Created by the same developers of Maukerja, Ricebowl mostly has the same features in terms of curating the listings in the “For You” page.

The same applies to the “Favourites Tab” where you can choose the same filters to curate the jobs you see.

Where this app differs is in its “Reputation” feature that supposedly gives you an employability score based on how you use the app.

Your score is increased depending on the details added in your profile, the applications sent from your matched job postings, and your interaction with the app’s content.

This gamification feature makes the job search more fun and interesting for a job seeker while also increasing the likability of this lesser-known app.

Ease Of Login: Create an account or login with Facebook or Google.

View Salary: Yes.

Details About Job: Job requirements and responsibilities, as well as company info and benefits.

Filtering: Expected salary, job title, job type (full time, part time, etc), and location.

Download it on: App Store or Play Store.

9. SlingApp

Its Tinder-esque style of applying and rejecting jobs on SlingApp makes this process an entertaining one as you’ll swipe left to reject and swipe right to apply.

Once you swipe right, an application is sent out immediately. Then, a prompt will pop up asking if you’d like to accept an interview with its recruiter. The job posting will then be added to an “Auto-interviu”.

Here, you can start answering some pre-interview questions about yourself or chat with the recruiter too.

Out of all the other apps in this review, I think SlingApp has the most personal experience in a job application by giving you a direct link to a recruiter.

This makes it feel like you’re dealing with a human employer instead of a faceless company as a whole.

Ease Of Login: Create an account or login with Facebook or Google.

View Salary: Yes.

Details About Job: Job description, type (full time, contract, etc), location, company and recruiter info.

Filtering: Job industry and location.

Download it on: App Store or Play Store.

10. WOBB

WOBB is another go-to for many.

Just like SlingApp, its UX is like Tinder too. Left is to reject, but this time, swiping right will show you more info about the job.

WOBB has a matching algorithm that’ll learn about your preferences and behavior from using the app to recommend jobs you’ll most likely be interested in.

Applying is simple too. You’ll just click on “Apply” and whatever information you’ve added about yourself from signing up for a profile is all that’s needed.

Its video cover letter is new to the platform. I think it’s a dynamic feature WOBB is trying out as most of us now see videos as a creative way to show off our personalities.

This function is also fitting for the type of employers that tend to be listed on WOBB, which tend to be young, “hip” startups.

Ease Of Login: Create an account or login with Facebook, LinkedIn, or Google.

View Salary: Yes, upon login.

Details About Job: Job description, requirements, company culture, photos from the company and its info.

Filtering: Job preference, type (full time, internships, etc), experience level (junior, manager, etc), and location.

Download it on: App Store or Play Store.

-//-

Job hunting can be a tiring and draining process especially when you’re desperate to make an income.

It’s admirable to see some of the apps mentioned above find new ways to keep it interesting and fun, from gamification to swiping and creating video resumes.

These new features are a huge step up from browsing on platforms with plain boring listings and a dry wall of information.

Though the latter type’s UI and UX can come off boring, one can argue that it’s straight to the point and gets the job done.

Either way, there are now more options than just endless scrolling on job websites for that “perfect” job, so download some apps, check them out, and get that bread!
