Too Good To Be True? This MyRepublic Phishing SMS Is Not As Innocent As It Seems

With its high-speed 1Gbps fibre broadband plan and promise of unlimited mobile data should it become Singapore’s fourth telco, MyRepublic has been attracting a lot of local excitement lately. And unfortunately, someone is attempting to take advantage of that.

Less than an hour ago, MyRepublic posted a warning about a phishing SMS on their Facebook page:

Initial comments on this post suggested that it began as a harmless April Fools’ joke, but MyRepublic quickly clarified that it appeared to be more malicious than that.

It’s easy to see how we might be fooled into clicking on a malicious link. Bad grammar and the fact that unregistered numbers should set off alarm bells in our heads aside, the message’s promise of an “UNLIMITED DATA plan” is eerily similar to MyRepublic’s ongoing free trial of their 1Gbps plan. Even if we have no intention of switching data plans, some of us might follow the attached link, just out of curiosity — and as they say, curiosity killed the cat.
