The Power of #SG50 Saves A Man Trapped Under A Truck

An accident that occurred at the junction of Bendemeer Road and Boon Keng Road took a turn of the feel-good sort when about 30 men gathered to free a pedestrian pinned under a truck. Unsurprisingly, the incident was captured on video via mobile phone nonetheless, and even more unsurprisingly, it made its rounds on social media when it was uploaded on Facebook by Foo Suan Wang yesterday.

Captioned Accident outside my office … Man screaming and then all walk of life came and help … Well done Singapore .., he also included a smattering of hashtags like #sg50 #help #accident.

While it is intriguing to see what you can find on social media platforms with #accident, the video has racked up over 260,000 views and over 5,000 shares. The last bit of the video showed the crowd of men disperse to allow some breathing space for a man in black lying on the ground – the one they had rallied to help.

According to The Straits Times, the man, who is in his 20s, suffered a leg fracture from the accident and was swiftly taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He was conscious at the time that he was released from the truck.

Back to the hashtags; really, #sg50? This is way out of the murky jurisdiction of SG50 celebrations, and I’d like to believe that any decent human being would jump in to help a man trapped under a truck. A woman was rushed to the hospital yesterday by a kind couple in a car, after she and her husband unsuccessfully waited an hour for a cab – SG50 ain’t gonna birth that baby. Singaporeans should be celebrated for being good samaritans, SG50 or no SG50.

Let’s hope this kindness doesn’t die off when its time for Singapore to turn 51.

Hashtags aside, well done to all those who played their role as a good samaritan before 2015, in 2015, and beyond 2015. Excelsior!
