He’s a man with a lot of life left in him but where is he now? On a hospital bed with multiple contraptions placed around his body to keep him alive as he is ridden in a comatose state with a leg forced to be amputated. And all of this because of a hit-and-run case which has transformed him from someone with bundles of energy to someone who is still unconscious after 7 days—all in a matter of a few unfortunate seconds.
The Incident
On June 9 at around 9am, Lew Kok Leong was travelling through the West Link Expressway (or known as the Salak Expressway, the extension of the Federal Highway from Seputeh to Taman Connaught Cheras) on his Yamaha bike with the registration number of AHV5789. Heading towards the Petaling Jaya direction via the Mid Valley federal route, the traffic in that vicinity was quite busy as usual and it was there that the 44-year old was met with a fate he did not expect.
An unidentified lorry driver rammed his vehicle into the unsuspecting motorcyclist, causing the poor victim to be flung from his bike and ended up on the road, unconscious and with serious injuries. If that wasn’t bad enough, the lorry driver decided to forego any sign of compassion and immediately fled the scene. Lew was left to bleed to death with no mercy given to him.
Lew’s family were only informed of the tragedy much later, the shock they felt indescribable as they rushed to the hospital in hopes of hearing better news of his recovery. But they were met with disappointment when the doctors mentioned how Lew was already in a completely comatose state since the accident and to make matters worse, his lower right leg was beyond recoverable so it had to be amputated to save his life.
Two days later on June 11, doctors reported that Lew had also suffered from severe concussions as the impact of the accident was too strong and sudden, which showed how forceful the collision was and how fast the lorry was being driven. The blood clots in his brain are currently being removed and surgery is still in the process of being undertaken. His condition to date is still reported as far from stable.
There have already been 2 parties who came up and reported the incident to the police. However, for reasons unknown, the identities of the suspects are not disclosed by the authorities and they insist that the matter is still being investigated before any further information can be given. So while time is taken to try and figure out the culprit’s identity, Lew remains in a paralysed state with no certainties on when he would even wake up.
Lew’s loved ones are all completely heartbroken from this unexpected tragedy. The victim is said to be a dear and respected person who does not deserve to have his life on the line because of something he could not control. The injustice of having the culprit responsible for Lew’s life dangling by a thread roam free brings them to desperately plea out to all Malaysians for any details about the incident.
To anyone who possibly may have recorded the incident via a dashcam or even if you were present within that location and witnessed the accident yourselves, please reach out to Lew’s family and provide them with any information you can. All leads on the current matter that could be given is highly appreciated. Though it might be too late to save Lew’s leg, it is still not too late to bring justice for him.
