The word ‘sustainable’ has been a buzzword for a while, and most of us can probably understand the meaning and importance of it.
But when it comes to a sustainable palm oil plantation, it’s not just about saving trees and the wildlife surrounding these areas. To be truly sustainable, there’s more to it than that.
Employee welfare and the right cultivation practices are some of them but not much awareness is created about it. Hence why some smallholders in Malaysia are not educated on how to grow sustainable palm oil and produce it the right way.
So we have organisations out there who make it their mission to guide and assist these smallholders. RSPO’s one of them and they’re using their certification to ensure smallholders in Malaysia understand the benefits of growing a sustainable palm oil plantation and what they can reap from it.
They invited us to visit a local plantation nestled in the outskirts of Perak where we got to see and hear for ourselves the stories of some smallholders who shared how being certified by RSPO has helped them.
