The Projector announces sudden closure, cites “increasingly unforgiving” cinema industry

Local indie theatre The Projector will be ceasing operations today (Aug 19), closing its last outlet at its original Golden Mile Tower location and bringing an end to its decade-long run.

In an Instagram post, the theatre announced that it will enter voluntary liquidation, citing the “increasingly unforgiving” realities of the cinema industry.

“Rising operational costs, shifting audience habits, and the global decline in cinema attendance have made sustaining an independent model in Singapore especially challenging,” it said.

“These pressures have been compounded by the broader realities of operating in the arts and culture sector in Singapore, where independent ventures navigate limited resources while contributing to the country’s evolving cultural landscape.”

The sudden announcement follows the closure of its Cineleisure Orchard outlet earlier this month on Aug 4.

The Projector first opened its doors in 2014, and had quickly established itself as a hub for cinephiles by hosting numerous film festivals and showcasing independent films from around the world.

Beyond cinema, it also served as a cultural and events space, bringing together artists, filmmakers, and audiences in a vibrant community.

From showcasing award-winning independent films to hosting film festivals, like the Singapore International Film Festival, the European Film Festival, Pink Screen, poetry slams, vintage markets, and charity fundraisers, The Projector has remained committed to broadening the definition of cinema and a community space in Singapore.

The venture was the brainchild of sisters Karen and Sharon Tan (who is no longer in the business), and business partner Blaise Trigg-Smith.

“It breaks our hearts to make this decision,” said Karen. “We’ve fought to keep The Projector alive through every challenge—from breathing new life into a disused cinema at Golden Mile Tower, to weathering the pandemic, to expanding to new spaces.”

She added that she is immensely grateful to everyone who has been part of the indie theatre’s journey, including its team, collaborators, partners and loyal audiences.

“The Projector may be closing, but we hope its spirit will live on in the conversations, ideas, and communities we’ve nurtured.”

Many other Singaporean cinemas have closed in recent years

The closure of The Projector highlights a wider trend of cinemas struggling to stay afloat in Singapore.

In July, Cathay Cineplexes’ operator, mm2 Asia, announced that it would consider several options, including shutting down all its cinemas, to address its ongoing financial concerns. Faced with mounting million-dollar debts, it could face its final curtain call after 85 years.

Beyond Cathay, two other cinemas across Singapore closed in 2024, including Filmgarde Cineplexes and WE Cinemas, formerly known as Eng Wah Cinemas.
