Tray tables up, cameras out: SIA’s new safety video is pure SG pride

SIA’s new inflight safety video demonstrates Singapore’s rich cultural identity

Singapore Airlines (SIA) and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) have jointly launched a new in-flight safety video featuring crew members taking you on a trip around the garden city on SIA’s social media pages on Thursday (Sept 4).

This comes eight years after the previous in-flight safety video was launched.

Like the previous video, this one takes viewers on a journey around Singapore, beginning with a welcome at Gardens by the Bay’s Cloud Forest. It also showcases some of Singapore’s landmarks and neighbourhoods alongside Singaporeans donned in ethnic garb, weaving in safety messages while highlighting Singapore’s cultural diversity.

But what exactly we do we see in the new video? Let’s take a look.

The who and where in SIA’s new in-flight safety video

The video couples real-life footage with watercolour effects on iconic murals throughout the city, inspired by Singapore’s vibrant arts landscape. This way, SIA and STB invite viewers to explore the nation-state’s rich multicultural heritage and visual arts scene.

This time, various neighbourhoods such as Hougang and Tiong Bahru are given screen time, showcasing Singapore’s iconic high-rise public housing estates, home to the majority of the country’s population.

Demonstrating take-off and landing safety procedures is a lion dance troupe, performing a pugilistic show for good fortune at Jurong Lake Gardens.

Next, we see two artists intricately apply the finishing touches on a airplane-themed kolam at a HDB void deck, which morphs into a illustration of aircraft emergency exits.

Then, Singapore’s national silat team show off their moves at Sentosa’s Tanjong Beach, while demonstrating the brace position and emergency evacuation procedures.

The video also pokes fun at the divide between durian lovers and haters in Singaporean families in a tongue-in-cheek way, with the latter having to take refuge in aircraft oxygen masks (typically used in emergencies) from the stench of durian, and the former judging them for their dramatic reactions towards the national fruit.

That scene did succeed in demonstrating how to use an oxygen mask amusingly, though.

In the final scene, SIA’s cabin crew gather at Esplanade rooftop to thank viewers for their attention, and the camera then pans out with an aerial view of Singapore’s famous night skyline.

“This strategic partnership allows us to showcase Singapore’s distinct character to millions of travellers worldwide, while reinforcing our position as a preferred destination for both business and leisure.” – Mr Kenneth Lim, Assistant Chief Executive, Marketing Group, Singapore Tourism Board

Mr Vinod Kannan, Senior Vice President Sales and Marketing, Singapore Airlines, said: “Safety remains our absolute priority, which is why each scene was carefully designed to reinforce these essential safety messages.”

SIA and the STB said in a joint statement on Sept 4 that the video will be progressively screened on all SIA flights from the end of October 2025.
