M’sian Startups Take Up The #MannequinChallenge, And It’s Pretty Darn Cool

If you’ve been seeing videos on your newsfeed of groups of people seemingly frozen in time as a camera moves in their midst, don’t worry. With the hashtag  #mannequinchallenge, it’s a viral video trend that netizens worldwide are jumping into.

As trends go, it’s pretty fun to see, particularly as the format allows for a lot of creativity. Early adopters ranged from sports teams, politicians, celebrities to late night show hosts.

When we turn our eyes locally, our young and completely on-trend startups have also jumped onto the bandwagon, resulting in hilarious videos that also give you a sneak peek into their offices and culture. We’ve collected the ones so far here. If you’ve ever wondered what goes on behind-the-scenes at some of these offices, here’s your change to have a look.

ServisHero

You may know ServisHero as the startup that works by connecting users to community-reviewed service providers, but see them in a whole new light as they put their abilities to freeze in a spot to the test.

There are so many things going on in this video, and so many questions to ask after. Why is that girl grabbing the other girl’s lanyard? Why is that dude holding so many phones? Do they have yoga mats in the office to sleep on? What’s with the devoted obsession to the bell?

KFIT

Responding to the challenge from ServisHero, this is what KFIT came up with for the mannequin challenge.

First off, check out the stunning KFIT office! I’m going to take away a few points for the people just sitting down with closed eyes, but the ping pong ball frozen in the net is a very nice touch! Check out how the dancing pole in the office is being put to good use.

I’m pretty much stunned that so many people managed to keep still for that amount of time. There’s no hint of movement as the camera person travels around. Definitely a stellar effort.

RecomN.com

Some of the guys over at RecomN.com did a short clip that gives you a glimpse into their office. This is far from their full team and so it may be less elaborate than the others on this list, but it’s definitely a passable contribution to the other videos under the hashtag.

There was even a build of suspense as you’re wondering what they were all reaching for. I thought it’d be nachos.

Flexiroam

Flexiroam is a telecommunications company that enables travellers to bypass roaming charges around the world. We’re not sure if such zany wackiness always goes on in their office, with the rubber chickens, umbrellas and motorcycle helmets. Hopefully the exaggerated expression of stress on the first person’s face doesn’t regularly show up in their office, except perhaps as a joke.

Spot the random Pokémon if you can!

They’re also playing a small game with viewers—see if you can spot how many FlexiroamX Starter packs are in the video before checking in the comments.

The Red Beanbag

This popular restaurant in Publika wasn’t challenged to join in, but they wanted some of the fun. For their chef’s birthday, they got together to do this video. I have to say, this is the most times I’ve seen someone blink in one of the mannequin challenges. I wonder if it’s deliberate.

We’re looking forward to seeing more Malaysian startups get on board. It’s definitely less annoying than some of the other internet trends that have surfaced in the past few months.

Startups, let us know in the comments if you’ve done one of your own!
