COVID-19: LTA Deploys Thermal Scanners, Safe Distancing Stickers On Public Transport

With most people in Singapore working from home and only travelling out for necessities during this ‘circuit breaker’ period, many of us may not board a public bus or train for some time.

However, some will still be commuting if they work in essential services or have other reasons to travel.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has started to implement additional safe distancing measures in the public transport network.

All MRT trains, train stations, buses, bus stops and bus interchanges will progressively be marked with safe distancing stickers.

The stickers will mark areas where commuters should stand, and seats that they should leave empty, in order to maintain a safe distance from others.

Transport Ambassadors will also be deployed to support bus captains and LTA enforcement officers in ensuring that people adhere to the measures.

For example, they may limit the number of commuters who can enter train stations and buses.

Thermal scanners will also be set up at selected MRT stations to screen commuters before they enter.

Commuters who are detected to have a fever will not be allowed to enter the station, and will be asked to seek medical attention at the nearest clinic immediately.

Serangoon and Tiong Bahru are the first two MRT stations where thermal screening has been implemented.

“Commuters are reminded to avoid travelling on the public transport network and visit their nearest clinic(s) if they are unwell,” said LTA.

Those who need to travel for essential purposes should also put on a reusable mask when travelling on the public transport.
