Singapore’s ‘circuit breaker’ will be extended for four more weeks until 1 June 2020.
Adding on to this, Minister for National Development Lawrence Wong said localised restrictions will be imposed in popular areas to “thin out the crowds and reduce transmission risks”.
Supermarkets and wet markets are some of such “popular areas”, where people tend to gather and safe distancing is difficult to enforce.
The localised restrictions will limit entry to odd or even days.
“For example, in certain wet markets, we will only permit entry on alternate days. And we will do this with a system based on your NRIC or your FIN number,” said Minister Wong.
Shoppers with an even number on the last digit of their NRIC or FIN number will be allowed entry on even dates of the month, while those with an odd last digit will be allowed entry on odd dates of the month.
They must present their NRIC, FIN or other identification forms, or will be turned away.
Based on the National Environment Agency (NEA)’s observations of the crowds at various markets, four popular markets will start implementing restricted entry on 22 April.
These are Geylang Serai Market, Block 104/105 Yishun Ring Road (Chong Pang Market), Block 20/21 Marsiling Lane, and Block 505 Jurong West Street 52.
