On October 23 (Friday), Japanese minimalist lifestyle brand MUJI announced in an email to its customers that it will be closing its Café&Meal MUJI outlet at Jewel Changi Airport from next Monday onwards.

With its Jewel Changi outlet shuttering, there will be only two other Café&Meal MUJI outlets in Singapore — Plaza Singapura and Raffles City.

Meanwhile, fans of the brand will be glad to know that its retail store in the same space is operating as usual.

With global travel coming to a halt, Changi Airport has seen a drastic dip in traffic.

This month, Minister of Transport Ong Ye Kung has revealed that Changi Airport is now serving just 1.5 per cent of its usual passenger volume and 17 per cent of the pre-Covid-19 number of flights.

It has also plummeted to be the 58th busiest airport for passenger traffic, down from seventh place.

Just like many retail stores, MUJI has been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic with overall decreased footfall traffic.

In June this year, it shuttered its Marina Square branch. All MUJI stores in Singapore were also temporarily closed for a period of time due to the Covid-19 situation.

In the same month, MUJI also filed for a Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States (US), citing Covid-19 as the driver behind the move.

Its liabilities are listed between US$50m (S$69.5m) and US$100m (S$139m), and are owed to between 200 and 999 creditors.

The household name’s US unit joined a slew of more than 100 companies that have declared bankruptcy in the US, and cited the Covid-19 pandemic as a key reason.
