In a world where our phones, tablets, and laptops are increasingly becoming more sophisticated, TVs are determined not to be left behind.
To that end, brands like LG have been continuously innovating its TV’s capabilities, and this year it revealed its new 4K Smart OLED TV line-up.
We’ll be highlighting 2 specific models in this article:
- LG C1 4K Smart SELF-LIT OLED TV with AI ThinQ, which we’ll call C1;
- LG G1 4K Smart SELF-LIT OLED evo TV with AI ThinQ, which we’ll call G1.
For now, it’s worth noting that the biggest difference between the two is their build.
The G1 is meant to be mounted flush on your wall thanks to its slimmer build, making it the sleeker and more space-saving choice. However, you can purchase a stand for it separately. Meanwhile, the C1 already comes with a TV stand.
In terms of performance, both TVs offer high-end specs that are quite on par with one another. Plus, they share LG’s four unique selling propositions which are Sharp Picture, Swift Response, Smooth Motion, and Slim Design.
So imagine you have either one of these TVs sitting in your living room and you want to highlight some of its features to your home guests, here are some conversation starters.
1. “Let me load up this Zack Snyder movie, you can actually see things going on in the background, instead of just all black.”
Despite the advancements made in LED technology, it can be argued that OLED will still beat an LED display’s picture quality. This is because LED uses backlight technology, whereas an OLED display’s pixels are all self-lit.
To put it simply, self-lit pixels are capable of producing perfect black and accurate colour, leading to brighter, sharper, and more detailed images.
Couple that with Dolby Vision IQ that optimises the picture quality based on the content genre and ambient surroundings, and Dolby Atmos that delivers multi-dimensional immersive sound, and you’ve got yourself the makings of a cinematic experience at home.
Additionally, LG’s OLED displays have also been tested by global testing agency Intertek, which confirmed that its OLED displays have 100% colour fidelity.
This means that whatever colours you see on-screen match the original image’s colours very closely, with LG’s HDR 10 Pro technology further enhancing the experience.
If you’re like me, you’d prefer to see images that have not been overly-filtered or enhanced with saturated hues. It may be a small detail, but personally, I feel that it’s one that adds to the immersive experience I want when watching a show or movie.
2. “You know how weirdly unnatural some videos seem when the motion is too smooth? This one is just right.”
LG prides itself on the smooth motion users can enjoy when watching shows on its OLED TVs. For example, there’s the OLED Motion Pro that displays fast-moving sports with less blur, enabling you to see all the quick and subtle details of each play.
However, picture processing features such as motion smoothing don’t necessarily benefit feature films the way they do sports and TV shows.
Motion smoothing can make films too smooth and overly processed. So, LG OLED TVs boast a feature called Filmmaker Mode that turns off this motion smoothing while preserving the original aspect ratios, colours, and frame rates.
Sometimes when a movie is shot in a lower frame rate (FPS) than what the TV’s display is, the TV will examine the two different FPS and attempt to artificially marry them.
This could lead to something Hollywood calls the “soap opera” effect, where a nice movie ends up looking like a home movie shot on a video camera.
Filmmaker Mode stops the TV from creating these unnatural effects, allowing viewers to enjoy the film as it is. As the aspect ratio is maintained too, you won’t run into that annoying issue of the film being stretched to fit, cutting off your subtitles and corners of the screen.
3. “I paid extra for spectacles lenses that can filter blue light… this TV screen helps by emitting less blue light to begin with.”
Because LG OLED TVs are able to show the blackest of blacks and vivid colours, you might be thinking, “That sounds great but intense, how will my eyes be affected?”.
The good news is that LG OLED TVs have been certified as low-blue light, flicker-free, and discomfort glare-free displays by international agencies TÜV Rheinland (TUV) and Underwriter Laboratories (UL), which do inspection, testing, and certification.
Blue light and flickering are some culprits of eye strain and fatigue. It’s why people fork out extra money to get blue light lenses that filter out the culprit—blue wavelengths.
This TV takes the precaution of using technology that decreases the amount of blue light emitted, which is a good first step to eye protection.
Of course, it’s still best to observe standard healthy TV-watching practices nonetheless, which includes keeping a good distance of at least 1m away from the screen.
4. “You think gaming on a TV can’t be as good as your high-end monitor? Try this.”
TVs are no longer just tools to watch shows on. As a moderate gamer myself, I personally think that the larger the screen, the better.

In all, these plus the display’s 120Hz refresh rate help reduce screen-tearing and stuttering when playing games with a higher FPS, allowing much smoother gameplay.
Add to this the fact that LG OLED TVs are capable of a swift 1ms response time, and you’ve got yourself the recipe for a game win (personal skills aside).
But that’s not all—there’s also the Game Optimiser where you can optimise your settings for various game genres including first-person shooters (FPS), role-playing games (RPG), and real-time strategy (RTS).
The above can be accessed via the Game Dashboard, which is a simplified menu that lets you tweak your settings on the fly, even during gameplay.
After all, there’s nothing more annoying than having to constantly pause your game just to adjust your settings, and you won’t end up irritating your teammates in a multiplayer game either.
5. “See, no need to waste time adjusting the display or volume, the TV does it automatically.”
Switching between different display modes to find one that best suits your current show or film could be a thing of the past.
Introducing LG OLED TVs’ α9 Gen4 AI Processor 4K, which is a chip that uses deep-learning algorithms to analyse and optimise content. Every adjustment to your picture and sound is now automatic, so you can just sit back and enjoy.
In terms of sound, the AI Sound Pro feature optimises the sound by genre for a more immersive experience. At the same time, the Auto Volume Leveling feature maintains consistent voice levels across different types of content.
What all this means is that you don’t have to keep reaching for the remote to adjust the volume and display across different movies and shows.
6. “Hey, go ahead and try asking my TV to dim the lights and make some ice for our drinks.”
LG ThinQ, the brand’s Internet of Things (IoT) system, has been integrated into its OLED TVs too, which means the TVs can be conveniently controlled via voice commands.
This AI also enables you to connect your TV to the rest of your home IoT system, allowing you to interact with other LG ThinQ-enabled products like your aircons, robotic vacuum cleaners, lights, speakers, and more, through your TV.
For example, once you’ve connected your TV to your smart lights and fridge via the Home Dashboard, you can command it to dim the lighting and instruct the fridge to begin preparing some ice, all with your voice.
