The world’s largest trading card game, Magic: The Gathering (MTG), has just pre-released its latest set, Dominaria United. The new set, which coincides with MTG’s 30th anniversary celebration, contains 281 cards.
Cards from the new set continue the storyline of Magic: The Gathering, with several cards featuring stained glass art treatment for collectors to collect.
What is MTG and how to play it?
For those who are unfamiliar with MTG, the tabletop and digital card game was first created back in 1993, and has now grown to over 40 million players globally.
A standard game of MTG sees a player attempting to defeat another player by casting spells or attacking with creatures to decrease the opponent’s “life total” from 20 to 0.
In recent years, MTG’s popularity rose to a new high with the creation of a new gameplay format called the Commander Format. It is a free-for-all format that allows more players to enjoy the game together.
In 2021, Wizards of the Coast, creator of MTG, generated a revenue of well over US$1 billion, showing no signs of slowing down.
Starting from Dominaria United and continuing through to the next eight Standard set releases, Wizards Play Network (WPN) stores will receive three to four foil retro-frame promos, showcasing classic cards throughout MTG’s history. These can only be received by players who attend pre-release events.
Exclusively for Singapore, players who pre-order at least S$140 on Dominaria United products can receive a limited-edition token collectable. The token is the first of a three-part series set, with varied transparency, and the full series will form a battlefield mural. Each customer will be entitled to one token only.
In Singapore, there are various local game stores which serve as a community hub for players to meet with one another and to enjoy the game. Some of these include Games Haven, Mana Pro, One MTG, Gamersaurus and more.
These local game stores have weekly MTG events that is attended by players of all ages.
Dominaria United officially releases to the public on September 9, with pre-release events happening at local game stores this weekend.
