It was supposed to be an enjoyable gathering among friends.
However, things took a tragic turn when a young Mexican man accidentally shoots himself dead while taking a gun selfie. He was only 21.
According to Mexican newspaper Excelsior, Oscar Otero Aguilar had been drinking with his friends and was so intoxicated that he wasn’t aware the gun was loaded. WFTS-TV reports that Aguilar had “borrowed the gun and was waving it around”, but it went off and shot him in the head.
Aguilar died on his way to the hospital.
Omar Abner Campos Vives, one of the friends whom Aguilar was drinking with, was arrested by the police. Another friend called “El Paco” made an attempt to run, Mexican newspaper Proceso reported.
When questioned by the police, Vives and Paco said that Aguilar had intended to upload the selfie on Facebook.
This isn’t the first time a selfie has gone horribly wrong.
Back in March, selfie-obsessed Danny Bowman tried to kill himself when he couldn’t capture the selfie he wanted. He eventually became depressed and took an overdose. Thankfully, he was discovered by his mother and rushed to the hospital in time.
Death leaves a heartache no one can heal. It is truly saddening and unthinkable with what Aguilar’s family and friends are going through during this time. Over and above that, it is shocking how some people would be willing to go through dramatic measures just to take the perfect selfie. Is it really worth it?

Swan Bites Man as He Takes a Selfie
Oh, the irony. According to the owner of the video, his brother-in-law was trying to take a selfie with the Trumpeter Swan to show his friend who got attacked by one that they weren’t all that bad. However, things didn’t quite go as planned.
Lesson learnt: animals are unpredictable.
Train Kick Selfie Guy
This is perhaps the most famous selfie of all time. 22-year-old Jared Frank took a video that captured him being kicked in the head by the foot of the train’s conductor. Long story short, the video became viral and has been viewed over 35 million times.
It’s painful and traumatising, but it looks like there’s a silver lining in his misfortune. According to The Independent, he is set to receive up to $250,000 of advertising revenue from being viewed on YouTube.
Selfies at Funerals
There’s a time and place for everything. That said, it is never okay to take a selfie when you’re attending a wake. Enough said.
