It was supposed to be an enjoyable gathering among friends.

However, things took a tragic turn when a young Mexican man accidentally shoots himself dead while taking a gun selfie. He was only 21.

According to Mexican newspaper Excelsior, Oscar Otero Aguilar had been drinking with his friends and was so intoxicated that he wasn’t aware the gun was loaded. WFTS-TV reports that Aguilar had “borrowed the gun and was waving it around”, but it went off and shot him in the head.

Omar Abner Campos Vives, one of the friends whom Aguilar was drinking with, was arrested by the police. Another friend called “El Paco” made an attempt to run, Mexican newspaper Proceso reported.

When questioned by the police, Vives and Paco said that Aguilar had intended to upload the selfie on Facebook.

This isn’t the first time a selfie has gone horribly wrong.

Back in March, selfie-obsessed Danny Bowman tried to kill himself when he couldn’t capture the selfie he wanted. He eventually became depressed and took an overdose. Thankfully, he was discovered by his mother and rushed to the hospital in time.

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal. It is truly saddening and unthinkable with what Aguilar’s family and friends are going through during this time. Over and above that, it is shocking how some people would be willing to go through dramatic measures just to take the perfect selfie. Is it really worth it?

There’s a time and place for everything. That said, it is never okay to take a selfie when you’re attending a wake. Enough said.
