140 People, 4 Amazing Speakers: Vulcan Post Holds First SG Meetup

Yesterday, we held our first ever Vulcan Post Singapore meetup.

The Tipping Point, as we’ve named this series of events, was held at The Refinery, a beautiful space in the corner of King George’s Avenue. And as the name of the series suggests, we wanted this event to be the place where change happens — not through us, per se, but through the gathering of like-minded individuals, and our friends in the industry (who know more than we do) sharing their thoughts and experiences with others willing to learn.

While registrations were slow at first, we were pleasantly surprised by the turnout. The initial goal of 80 attendees was completely wiped out by a whopping 120 signups, something that went beyond our expectations and astounds us till now. Though it was a stretch for the venue space, it was what many of our friends called a “happy problem”.

We had a great array of speakers. First up, we had our own Managing Editor and Founder, Jacky Yap, who shared our growth story of nearly two years, bringing Vulcan Post to the publication it is today.

Isaac Tan, Co-founder of The Platform Collective, shared with everyone the benefits of collaboration, and how the shared economy can truly enhance the startup community in Singapore.

Shn Juay, Regional Marketing Director of Paktor, shared the best approach to leverage upon marketing to scale up your startup.

Specifically, she shared the importance of automating your marketing processes for lean businesses, and also the benefits of testing, while cautioning attendees not to spend too much on it (about $50-$100 works fine).

“It’s all about experimentation,” Shn said.

Sunita Kaur, Managing Director for Spotify Asia, shared in a fireside chat her favourite Spotify feature, Spotify Running, and even gave a live demo of how it works. She addressed how the entrance of direct competitors like Tidal and Apple Music serves as validation of the work they do, despite them being only a 1500-strong team covering 53 markets worldwide.

“When Tidal first came out, our user numbers went through the roof!”

The Tipping Point refers to a single point from which a series of changes begin. These small changes could cause a ripple effect, or spark off something much greater than itself. And that is what we hope these meetups will be. A small spark in our community of partners, friends, and readers that will make big things happen — things that are much greater than ourselves.
