The much-anticipated launch of Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Series of new phones is here. In a virtual event, the brand released its new line of flagships with the Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra phones.

Here, we’ll go through what each one offers across the board for variants to be released in Malaysia, and highlight some new features that stood out to us.

Cameras

– Triple-lens with a 50MP wide, 12MP ultra-wide, and 10MP telephoto cameras

– Quad-camera setup with 108MP wide, 12MP ultra-wide, and two 10MP telephoto cameras one with 3x zoom and the other with 10x zoom
– 100x Space Zoom

While the camera specs don’t appear all too different from the S21 series’, Samsung deems its S22 lineup as having the strongest AI photo processing functions for their phones.

For example, all phones will come with Samsung’s Nightography features that rely on AI to sharpen details and reduce noise in low light conditions of photos and videos. It does so by blending multiple images captured in different exposures into a single frame.

They will also be enabled with AI-based autofocus and optical image stabilisation (OIS) for photos and videos.

An auto FPS adjustment for videography has been introduced as well, where the phone’s AI will switch between filming in 30FPS or 60FPS depending on the lighting conditions of your surroundings.

Camera bumps on the S22 and S22+ still look similar to the S21 Series, but no longer have a metal finish that bleeds into the phone’s chassis.

The S22 Ultra takes on a bigger change to its camera design by completely eliminating the camera bump housing.

Battery

The S22+ and S22 Ultra support 45W fast wired charging, while for the S22, it’s 25W. All variants are enabled with 15W fast wireless charging, and reverse wireless charging.

Compared to the battery specs of the S21 Series, it appears that Samsung has reduced its battery capacity for the S22 and S22+ models. The S21 had a 4,000mAh battery while the S21 Plus had a 4,800mAh one.

All variants will come with a 4-nanometer processor and are 5G enabled. This means higher power efficiency and overall performance while taking up less hardware space.

As part of Samsung’s sustainability efforts, the S22 lineup features components made from discarded fishing nets to create a more environmentally friendly plastic.

In the S22 Ultra for example, these components are used in the phone’s speaker module, volume and power button’s brackets, along with the phone’s inner lining for the S-Pen.

All the variants have a water resistance rating of IP68, which allows the phone to withstand submersion in freshwaters 1.5m deep for 30 minutes. However, it is not advised for beach or pool use.

On top of the Galaxy S22 lineup, Samsung also teased the improved specs for its newest premium tablet, the Galaxy Tab S8, S8+, and S8 Ultra.

Just like the S22 Series’ phones, the tablets will also have a 4-nanometer processor. They will be equipped with 6GM RAM and an expandable 1TB storage to accommodate gaming, streaming, and working.

Its battery is said to last for up to 15 hours of uninterrupted video playback, and support 45W super-fast charging, which can get the tablet up to 100% within 80 minutes.

All devices mentioned above will run on Samsung’s new OS update, One UI 4 which allows for more customisability. For example, if you set a photo as your wallpaper, the phone will suggest a complementary colour palette to apply to its buttons and icons.

This feature was already equipped within the Galaxy S21 FE which we’ve reviewed, and seems to be an update that is being rolled out on existing Samsung phones.
