On top of the star-studded cast, Watsons’ 2023 CNY ad stars a DJ Rabbit, otherwise referred to in the story as not DJ One, nor DJ Two, but DJ Tu (兔).
The video opens with DJ Tu starting up music on his turntable deck in a family’s Peranakan mansion. From there, each family member pops out of the house to showcase their CNY looks, and how they’ve used Watsons’ products to channel their inner beauty.
The scenarios played out in the video are quite reminiscent of the quirky behaviours of your average family members.
For example, there were elderly parents practising taichi and wingchun in the backyard and boasting about supplements, as seniors tend to do, and the all-too-familiar petty fights we have with our own siblings.
The video doesn’t stray from CGI-movie magic either, as there’s even a scene for physics and gravity-defying kung fu, throwing us into a wuxia moment.
In the end, the chaos is resolved with DJ Tu going into a monologue about how beauty is something that comes from within.
A piece of trivia: The monologue DJ Tu gives was inspired by the pep talk Mel Gibson’s character gives before the war in the film, Braveheart (1995).
The touching moment complete, DJ Tu leads everyone into a song and dance about showcasing their inner beauty through self-care.
Celebrity cameos you’ll find making appearances this year include Malaysian model Amber Chia, YouTuber Phei Yong, KOL Perry Kuan, Han Xiao Aii, Philip Yeoh, and Malaysian actors Jordan Voon and Kwok Yan Yan.
