We all know that the smartphones of today are capable of achieving many pretty amazing feats. Chinese electronics manufacturer OPPO, however, doesn’t seem to be satisfied with what its phones can do.

In two new videos — released last month on OPPO Singapore’s Facebook page — the brand’s R5 smartphone is seen being used to hammer a nail into a plank of wood, as well as to break a block of ice.

While it might seem a good way to prove just how strong and scratch-resistant the R5 might be, the videos seem to have created a fair amount of confusion amongst its viewers.

Many viewers were impressed with the videos, with some asking about release dates and availability. But the main issue that viewers took with the videos was that they did nothing to inform them about the specs of the phone. Some also left sarcastic comments about the video, asking what ice-breaking and hammering had to do with a phone.

OPPO Singapore even replied to most of the comments, apparently taking the criticisms in their stride.

I’ll admit: at first glance, the videos do seem pretty cool. And amongst a thousand other promotional videos, they are probably the ones that will grab your attention — even if you realise later that you’ve learnt nothing about the phone. But when it comes to advertising, perhaps all publicity is good publicity?
