If you are a frequent patron of McDonald’s, here’s some good news for you: in the coming months, all 123 McDonald’s outlets in Singapore will be equipped with Singtel’s WiFi connection, allowing Singtel customers to surf the Internet freely.
According to a Straits Times report, Singtel’s WiFi network is meant to complement its 4G network, especially in crowded places, so that more people can stay online without any slowdown in connectivity.
The first few McDonald’s outlets to come with free Singtel WiFi include those at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3, Serangoon’s Nex shopping mall and Causeway Point.
Good News Or Bad News?
While offering free Internet might be another attempt by Singtel to court and retain its customer base, it could encourage even more students to study there, robbing other customers of valuable space. With a minimum spend of just a drink (or ice cream), customers can use the space for as long as the WiFi service is available, leaving other customers without a table.
There is no information as yet on how existing Singtel customers will be able to connect to the WiFi service.
Still, this is a nice gesture from Singtel: it’s been a while since we received positive news from the local telco, especially after Singtel suffered its biggest outage in April. And Singtel is not exactly unaware of consumer dissatisfaction: as part of its rebranding earlier this year, they promised better customer experiences to everyone. This was in response to a growing number of angry customers who have provided feedback about Singtel’s patchy coverage and poor customer service.
Hopefully, this partnership with McDonald’s won’t cause any more frustration than it should.
