We’ve seen the world go mad with Star Wars mania of late, from special LEGO, to Changi Airport (of all places) becoming overrun with Star Wars paraphernalia, and assorted airlines with liveries. And we have to say, we really don’t mind.
But damn Google, always ahead with the trends. This time they’re on the Star Wars bandwagon, prompting users to choose sides and then watch as their favourite Google apps like Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube, Chrome and many more transform to reflect their chosen path.

How To Pledge Allegiance
After you’ve chosen your side on Google, make sure to download the Chrome extension for the full effect. You’ll see your side infiltrate your ‘New tabs’, Gmail backgrounds, Google maps, YouTube, and even the ‘Loading’ icon. There’s more Google apps that are covered of course, which makes the whole experience even more fun.
Because it’s so extensive, Google says it may take a while for the apps to update with your preference. So you might not see all the new Star Wars themed changes immediately, but it’s worth it. The best thing is that some of these changes will also show up on your mobile phone (hint: check out Google Maps).
This collaboration that Google has with Lucasfilm and Disney is only just expanding, as we found out from the Google Blog. Both old and new fans are going to be mighty pleased with Google’s latest initiative — it’s a level up from a regular doodle to a fully blown campaign. Last time we checked, the current world order of good and evil is looking pretty balanced. For now.
According to Clay Bavor, VP of Product Management at Google, “And that’s just the beginning. We’ve got more coming between now and opening night — the Millennium Falcon in all its (virtual reality) glory included, so stay tuned. And we’ve hidden a few easter eggs, too. So awaken the Force within, and be on the lookout for things from a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…” Sounds great to us.
Happy fiddling around and remember to use the Force. Oh yeah, I joined the dark side by the way.
