Baking is probably not my thing – I need to get all the ingredients, the recipe, a decent oven and of course, the patience to wait for the final pastry to be perfected. When you put your ingredients into the oven, it either turns out to be perfect after hours of baking, or it turns out to be subpar in taste. More often than not, it’s the latter.
Batterful, a newly launched (really new) website wants to make the process of baking easier for people like me. With Batterful, you can purchase your “baking recipe”, which comes with the exact ingredients you need and get them delivered to your doorsteps. Batterful wants to take away the hassle of:
- Shopping for ingredients and lugging these heavy ingredients home
- The mess of measuring the ingredients before putting them into the mixing bowl
- Wastage for people who bake at home.
The idea is started by Gary Thong, a recent SMU graduate and his business partner Ted from NUS who knew each other since secondary school. When we asked if the team believes the idea will work, Gary confidently shared that it will. Though the subscription box idea is not new in Singapore, Batterful is the only one doing cake recipes delivery.
“The subscription box business model is new in Singapore but the concept is already market tested in the United States. We have no doubt that this trend is not country specific because it solves the problem of time consumption in our increasingly hectic society. We save our customers time by providing them new recipes every month and also delivering all the ingredients needed to their doorstep,” Gary told Vulcan Post.
At SGD$29.95 with a $2.95 delivery fee, you can get a box of ingredients and recipe to start baking straight away. The new site currently features a Honey Pecan Cake recipe as their maiden recipe – and they will be refreshing their recipes weekly.
Will it work? Maybe – Grain, a monthly subscription box that delivers healthy snacks around the island has proven that there’s a demand for subscription boxes in Singapore. Of course, there are a few other subscription boxes in Singapore which has closed down over the past few years too.
So for those of you who might be interested in picking up a hobby, or simply finding an activity for friends and families, Batterful might be suitable for you to pick up a fun baking experience.
