Over the weekend of 12-13 November, Etsy set up its ‘Made Local’ marketplace at the outdoor plaza of Capitol Piazza, with 40 local Etsy crafters taking part in Singapore’s first-ever Etsy marketplace.
It was organised by a local community of Etsy sellers – Etsy Craftivist SG.
According to one of the founders of Etsy Craftivists SG, Ms Salinah Zailani, they organised the Etsy marketplace so that “sellers and buyers [can be] together”.
Shoppers will also have a better idea of the effort that goes behind the making of handmade products, in the hopes that it would help promote the brands and encourage locals to support these local craft-makers.
Even if you had no intention on shopping for yourself, the Etsy ‘Made Local’ marketplace offered ideas for Christmas gifting, or even just for some feel-good shopping by helping to support homegrown brands.
Here are all the things you might have missed at Singapore’s first Etsy marketplace:
Paula Pang is a local illustrator who has had her name on children’s books with her whimsical artwork… just like her butt cushion.
Captain Lulo by Cheryl Teo featured vibrantly-designed and handmade paper illustrations guaranteed to brighten up your rooms.
Elizabeth Little’s home-sewn accessories and clothing lit up the atmosphere with their stunning colours.
Typewrite_sg shared the painstaking preparations that go into the final products that graced the marketplace booth.
Curator of interesting things and ex-“Magic Babe”, Ning Cai was also present to show her support for local craft makers such as Spankylovescrochet.
And who doesn’t love cats, especially when they’re wearing coconut bras and grass skirts?
These designs by Colourfulstrings were a definite hot seller.
Based on the success of the first Etsy ‘Made Local’ marketplace, it would be a good bet that they might bring it back again next year.
