Singtel announced today (15 Sep) their unlimited data plan, the DATA X INFINITY add-on subscription, for all existing and new Singtel customers.

Its telco rivals, StarHub and M1 have revealed similar unlimited data plans just weeks before.

The postpaid plans affected are the Combo 3, Combo 6, and Combo 12. Existing customers on these plans now get unlimited SMS and talk time.

To enjoy the DATA X INFINITY subscription, existing and new Singtel customers can add-on $39.90 per month on top of their current mobile plans.

But, Wait – Look Closer

In a post by Facebook user Poh Elsen, he said, “Once u exceed 50GB. Ur speed will be 1mbps. Wat a lie. (sic)”

The TL;DR here is that the ‘infinite data’ Singtel promises is not really infinite at all.

If you have subscribed to the Combo 6 plan (which gives you a base of 6GB of data) along with this add-on, you basically get a total of 56GB of mobile data.

Once you exceed this amount of data for the month, your data speed will be set to 1Mbps until your next billing cycle.

To put things into perspective, these are the median 4G speeds from July to December last year:

The terms state that this is to ensure that other customers get to enjoy “reliable services” should they exceed this 50GB limit.

There is also a $10.70 one-time activation fee to subscribe to the DATA X INFINITY plan.

On top of that, customers who wish to terminate said plan within the 24 months will be charged a recurring recovery fee for the remainder of the contract period.

Well, now that you know, you can make a more informed choice.
