Earlier in August, Chinese electronics giant Huawei officially edged out Apple, as it was ranked the world’s 2nd smartphone seller after Samsung.
Huawei had shipped out 54.2 million units in the second quarter of 2018, earning it a record-high global market share of 15.8%.
Its Huawei P20 and P20 Pro phones, which was launched in April this year, significantly helped it to “build a high profile in the market”. This resulted in Huawei leading the massive China smartphone market with a 27% market share in Q2 2018.
Fast forward six months later, Huawei is back again with a new flagship series.
At the launch event held at ExCel Exhibition Centre in London today, Huawei announced four new additions to the Mate family: the Huawei Mate 20, Huawei Mate 20 Pro, Huawei Mate 20 X, and the Porsche Design Huawei Mate 20 RS.
Reflective of the Huawei Mate Series DNA, all devices carry a Full View display with a high screen-to-body ratio. Compactly engineered, every device from the 6.39-inch Huawei Mate 20 Pro to the 7.2-inch Huawei Mate 20 X can be comfortably used with a single hand.
For the Porsche Design Huawei Mate 20 RS, Huawei and Porsche Design ingeniously combined race track elements with premium materials — handcrafted genuine leather and glass technology — to create a device that exudes elegance and offers a firm, ergonomic grip.
The Huawei Mate 20 Series is powered by Huawei’s highest-performing system on chip (SoC) to date: the Kirin 980.
Compared to Kirin 970, the latest chipset is equipped with CPU that is 75 per cent more powerful, GPU that is 46 per cent more powerful, and NPU that is 226 per cent more powerful.
“Smartphones are an important entrance to the digital world. The HUAWEI Mate 20 Series is designed to be the best ‘mate’ of consumers, accompanying and empowering them to enjoy a richer, more fulfilled life with their higher intelligence, unparalleled battery lives and powerful camera performance,” said Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer BG.
Key Features Of The Huawei Mate 20 Series:
1. Leica Ultra-Wide Angle Lens To Help You Capture More
The Huawei Mate 20 phones come equipped with a revolutionary matrix camera system.
It has a single-lens 24MP front camera at f2.0 aperture; and retains the Leica triple lens camera system for the rear. The back camera configuration comprises a 40MP wide-angle lens @ f1.8, 20MP ultra-wide angle lens @ f2.2, and an 8MP telephoto lens @ f2.4.
Together, the trio of lenses supports a wide range of focal lengths (equivalent to the performance of a 16-270mm zoom lens), enabling it to mimic shots taken with professional cameras.
The 16mm Leica ultra-wide angle lens lets users capture more and further — it creates a sense of spaciousness and a three-dimensional effect to the images.
The new camera system also supports macro distance, which produces crisp images of objects that are placed as close as 2.5cm from the lens.
The added ultra-wide angle lens and macro support completes the feature set of the camera system, elevating it to a truly all-round camera that is ready to capture any and all action.
2. Ultra-Long Lasting Battery. And You Can Also Have The ‘Power’ To Charge Other Devices.
Besides superb performance, the Huawei Mate 20 Series also features groundbreaking improvement on battery life.
The Huawei Mate 20 Pro houses a large, high-density 4,200mAh battery, while the Huawei Mate 20 X supports an ultra-large 5,000 mAh battery.
Clearly, the phones have an unmatched battery life, which lasts 33% longer than Samsung Galaxy Note 9.
The Huawei Mate 20 Series support 40W Huawei SuperCharge, which gives the device 70 per cent charge in just 30 minutes.
As a comparison, the current Mate 10 with a 4,000mAh battery can charge only up to 58% in 30 minutes using a 4.5V 5A SuperCharge power adapter.
It also supports 15W Huawei Wireless Quick Charge, the industry’s fastest wireless charging solution — which is higher than what you get from Samsung and Apple.
Another cool thing is that it supports Wireless Reverse Charge, which enables the device to work as a power bank for selected electronic devices supporting wireless charging.
You can simply place another device at the back of the Huawei Mate 20 Series smartphones and it will automatically charge up the other device, including both Apple and Samsung devices!
3. Shoot And Edit Awesome Videos With The Huawei Mate 20 Series
The Huawei Mate 20 Series feature an AI Portrait Colour video mode. Using AI, the Huawei Mate 20 Series can isolate human subjects and desaturate the colours around them to dramatically highlight the person.
AI Spotlight Reel identifies clips with a shared theme, and automatically generates a montage, made entirely of highlights.
4. Hi-Vision and AI Real-Time Translation
The Hi-Vision feature is pretty nifty as it can recognise food, landmarks and even paintings.
The food recognition function can even determine the caloric content of certain foods!
The science behind it? HiVision uses the Azumio Food Recognition API to recognise many different kinds of food. It lists over a hundred foods that are that are possibly recognised locally for faster results.
HiVision also uses Microsoft Translator to translate text in real-time. The support languages are English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, French, Russian, Italian, German, and Portuguese.
