Entertainment company mm2 Asia announced today that it is launching a free video streaming service in April 2020.
Called mPlay Asia, it will be rolled out in key Chinese-speaking markets such as Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
According to mm2, it will leverage the group’s regional production capabilities and experience in serving the region’s audience base.
That said, content on the platform will come from the group’s production though the firm has plans in the pipeline to acquire more titles in the future.
As it is designed for mobile streaming, mPlay Asia will play short-form content in Mandarin that spans between three and five minutes.
It will also feature live-streaming and progressively roll out other features such as personalisation, interactivity and e-commerce capabilities.
Content will be uploaded weekly for live streaming and video-on-demand viewing.
With this new platform, mm2 hopes that it will help generate revenue for the group via advertising and branded content.
According to mm2 CEO Chang Long Jong, the demand for quality online Chinese content continues to grow “exponentially”.
“We aim to build a platform that is dedicated to providing short video clips with high production values that appeal strongly to our audiences in the region,” he added.
