Travellers will gradually be allowed to transit through Changi Airport starting from 2 June, when the circuit breaker is lifted.
According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), this is part of Singapore’s strategy to gradually reopen air transport.
The Ministry of Health also said yesterday (19 May) that Singapore is starting to explore the possibility of conducting essential travel in limited numbers between countries with low Covid-19 transmission rates.
Short-term visitors have not been allowed to enter or transit through Singapore since 23 March.
Only foreign passengers returning to their home country under their governments’ arrangements are currently allowed to transit.
Changi Airport has also greatly reduced its service in view of the decline in air traffic due to Covid-19. It has suspended operations in Terminal 2 since May 1, and Terminal 4 since May 16.
As transit resumes, stringent measures will be applied to ensure the safety of passengers and airport staff.
Passengers will be separated into designated facilities, and airport staff must don personal protective equipment when interacting with them.
Existing measures including safe distancing, wearing masks and temperature screening will continue.
Airlines can submit their proposals for transfer lanes, which should take aviation safety and the health of passengers and flight crew into account.
