[This is a paid review with Takeaway Bedding.]

In a study by Saatva in 2019, 1 out of 3 respondents said that they’ve argued with their partners about mattress firmness. From that lot, 12% preferred to have a firm mattress, while 30% of them favoured a soft mattress.

Luckily for me, I get to choose my own firmness because I don’t have a partner to argue with (haha).

That said, if you’re in a relationship, mattress firmness should be a topic of conversation because we spend roughly 33 years of our lives in bed.

But, choosing a mattress is not an easy job. There are many factors to consider, especially when you’re not just buying for yourself. Most people have a specific preference for mattress size, width, height and firmness.

We recently received a king-sized mattress called the Takeaway Ori from Takeaway Bedding, a local mattress company. And it’s a mattress made for couples, with one side built to be hard and one side soft.

Note: You can order your mattress online and have it freshly made and delivered to you within 10 working days.

Takeaway Bedding also has two other mattresses with Takeaway Ace (a firm mattress) and Takeaway Mix (a hybrid mattress that you can flip over for different type of firmness).

But… How Can A Single Guy Test A Couple’s Mattress?

The answer to that is quite simple. All I had to do is just roleplay myself as a couple.

I didn’t even know what type of firmness I prefer, so this test helped me find out.

When the mattress arrived, it was neatly vacuum-packed into a box. While you’re not advised to handle it alone because of its weight, it was no problem for a strong man like me (I did need help to bring it into the room).

I also got two of Takeaway Bedding’s pillows to try out.

To unpack, all I had to do was pull out the mattress from the box and it’s rolled up and primed for cutting. Once the plastic was removed with the cutter provided, the bed slowly expanded.

You can see the mattress slowly decompressing itself

So, I did what any sane person would do after unboxing a mattress: lie down on it immediately.

My Experience With A Couple’s Mattress

The first thing I felt was how cool the top of the mattress was.

It is layered with what Takeaway Bedding calls the Ice Yarn Fabric. They said that it helps with regulating body temperature and keeping you cool throughout the night.

As someone who’s not bothered by the cold, I loved this addition.

The middle layer of the mattress is what makes it unique. The blue side of the bed is softer and is rated at 4 to 4.5 on the firmness scale, while the red side of the bed is 6.5 to 7 on the firmness scale.

For an actual single kaki like me, having this option is beneficial. I can lay on the firmer side and browse on my phone and work from bed, then flip over to the softer side whenever I want.

It’s a win-win situation for me.

When I laid down like a starfish in the middle of the bed, the change in firmness is subtle. The blue side’s mattress does sink in a little bit more compared to the red side.

The bed also comes with a zero-motion transfer feature—which I tried out with my fake partner (my colleague). I was aware of him hopping into bed, but in the gif, you can see that my body was unaffected by his movement.

Spending A Night On The Bed Alone (But Not Really)

I tried out the firm side first, to play mobile games, do some work, and have some imaginary conversations with my totally existent partner, myself.

0 notifications on my phone 🙁

After getting tired, I decided to call it a night at around 1 AM. Because I’m a belly sleeper, I flopped over and let the bed take me away to dreamland.

I found myself unable to sleep soundly as the pillow was a little too hard for my liking, so it is not the fault of the bed.

Then again, a single night is not sufficient for someone to test the bed—which is why Takeaway Bedding does offer you a 99-night trial with free returns if you’re unhappy with it. Alvin said that returned mattresses are deep-cleaned and donated to those in need, as they do not resell the mattresses.

The Verdict Of Spending The Night With Myself

Despite the firmness of the pillow (that’s another discussion for another day), I woke up decently rested, and it’s definitely much comfier compared to my usual single-bed mattress.

That said, if you’re a couple with a different desires when it comes to firmness, this mattress could help end your arguments.

I personally enjoyed the cold top of the mattress and I liked having the choice of firm or soft mattress to sleep on depending on my mood. Thanks to this test I now know that I prefer having a firmer mattress.
